The masterprogramme Biobased Sciences teaches interdisciplinary design of biobased production chains including biomass production, bioconversion, biorefinery and societal, logistic and economic transition processes. Thus, technical, economic, social and environmental aspects are integrated to come to a transition to a biobased and circular economy.

Waarom aan de Wageningen University?

At WU multi- and interdisciplinarity are essential. The programme offers all aspects necessary for a transformation towards a biobased and circular economy. The focus is on archiving benefits from integration of different disciplines and different approaches. Other biobased programmes often choose specialization in one of the aspect rather than the integration.

opbouwThe Master's Biobased Sciences is a two-year programme. In the first year you will start with two foundation courses: Biobased Economy and Circular Economy. These courses focus on important aspects when designing a biobased and/or circular economy. Afterwards you will be free to choose courses by yourself and finalize the year with an Academic Consultancy Training.
The second year of the Master will consist of a master thesis and an internship that fits your specialisation.
Start with the multi- and interdisciplinary courses Principles in biobased Economy and Circular Economy is followed by 4 specialized courses and a number of optionals. The first year is finalized with an academic master cluster, the academic consultancy training.

specialisaties

specialisatie Biorefinery and Conversion

The specialisation focuses on the processing steps, starting from biomass refinery up to the production of chemicals, biopolymers or renewable energy.

Engineering is fully integrated with physical and organic chemistry, biochemistry and biology and product quality- and process requirements from the interested party/customer. In 2017/2018 courses of this specialisation can already be followed within the MSc Biotechnology as specialisation Environmental and Biobased Technology.

specialisatie Biomass Production and Carbon Capture

The specialisation focuses on the knowledge of plant physiology and development, genetics and breeding, and plant biotechnology for biomass production.

Biomass can be produced in the field, in greenhouses, in the sea as well as in forests. In 2017/2018 courses of this specialisation can already be followed within the MSc Plant Sciences as specialisation Biomass Production and Carbon Capture.

This specialisation focuses on economic aspects to enable the transition from a petrochemical to a biobased economy.

Graduates will be able to assess opportunities and challenges of the biobased and circular economy form an interdisciplinary perspective and will develop expertise in one to the three mayor disciplines (specializations). Based on this, they are able to research and develop robust biobased and circular concepts, products, or processes and consider their technical, economic, and societal sustainability.
