Waarom aan de Amsterdam VU?

Text Mining is cross disciplinary and open for all students with a Bachelor or Master degree. You do not need to have a specific background in linguistics or programming, you will learn the basics in the first courses.
Text mining is cross-disciplinary in a true sense. Experts in text mining must have knowledge from the linguistics and the technical aspects, and they need to understand the field of knowledge in which they are applying the techniques. There are tools available on the internet, but it requires insight, knowledge and experience to use the technology properly and to understand the outcome.

Text Mining is open for all students with a Bachelor degree. You will learn the basics of linguistics and programming in the first courses. Bachelors in Linguistics will find out exactly how your knowledge can be applied in mining texts. If you have a computational background you will learn how to deal with text effectively.

Only at the VU you will find a master's that is fully dedicated to Text Mining and covers both the linguistics and the AI-techniques.

There is a fast-growing need for specialists that can apply text mining, turn it into a product and exploit the results in industry, organisations and NGOs. This master offers you a scientific challenge as well as a great opportunity to apply your field competence in science and industry. Students can combine their thesis with an internship.

Studieprogramma

opbouw
First you will learn the basics of linguistics and programming in Python. Next are language processing and Deep Learning. After that you will really dive into text mining. Your thesis may be based on an internship at the industry
The study program
  • In the first period you will learn the basics of linguistics and programming in Python for Text Analysis. We have a lot of experience in teaching students without any computational background to program in Python. If you have no experience with linguistics, following an electronic course (a so-called MOOC) may be helpful. We will advise you.
  • The second period brings you more specialized knowledge and skills: we will show you how to look at language as data and you will learn to use methods and tools for the processing of language in the course NLP Foundations.
  • In period three and four yow will really dive into text mining. In Applied Text Mining we will give you hands-on experience to build what we call a reading machine. In Text Mining in Domains you apply your newly acquired knowledge in your professional domain. Next to this you will follow a course in Machine Learning, especially for working with language.
  • Write your thesis in the last two periods, probably based on an internship at the industry.

Typical working groups are of about 18 students. In the programming course, students will learn the basic programming skills in the Python course, most other courses will teach you both skills and (theoretical) knowledge. Theory is meant for understanding what you are doing at the computer lab and for understanding and evaluating the output. Students will be encouraged to be critical on the theory and on the output of tools, programs and results at the computer lab. For the course Text Mining in Domains and the thesis/internship, the supervisors will draw the general outlines and students can fill these in, choosing their own topic.

objectives
There is a fast-growing need for specialists that can apply text mining, turn it into a product and exploit the results in industry, governmental organisations and NGOs. After this master you will be an expert in mining textual big data.
There is an extremely large amount of digitally available text, yet it is very hard to find just that piece of information in this big data that is relevant in a specific situation. What opinions do people have on a hotel, a travel agency, or whatever? What are exactly the pro's and con's in the vaccination debate? How are the arguments validated and by whom? How do these debates change over time? There is a fast-growing need for specialists that can apply text mining, turn it into a product and exploit the results in industry, governmental organisations and NGOs. The master Text Mining will train you to be such an expert.

For mining information from very large repositories of text, you need to know what you are looking for and how to find it. As a bachelor in your field of knowledge you probably know what kind of information you could be looking for. The master Text Mining trains students how to use text mining by applying AI techniques. You will learn what the possibilities and limitations are, how to reflect on the outcomes and on the cross-disciplinary aspects.
