In the Master's in Human Movement Sciences you will learn to translate multidisciplinary scientific knowledge to applications in sports and healthcare practice. From the latest developments in sports training to new approaches to rehabilitation, this Master's programme provides state of the art insights into the ways in which motor performance can be enhanced. From biomechanics to psychology. From exercise physiology to neurorehabilitation. And from muscle function to motor development. The programme provides ample possibilities for customization of your personal programme, so that you can create a profile that fits your interests.

The programme is taught in English.

tracks

track Rehabilitation

In this track you learn to apply biophysical (biomechanics/physiology) methods in fields of health and rehabilitation.

track High Performance Coaching

This track has been developed in collaboration with the Amsterdam Institute of Sport Science , and focuses on the application of scientific knowledge in the field op top sport coaching.

For this reason, you will conduct your research project in collaboration with a top sport coach. (A maximum of 20 students can be admitted per year; selection based on letter of motivation.)

track

In this track your learn to tackle sports-related issues from a, predominantly biophysical perspective (muscle and exercise physiologics and biomechanics).

track Sport Psychology

This track covers the broad field of sport psychology, and also provides potential links to health-related issues.

It provides you with an excellent background for a post-graduate course to become an accredited sport psychologist.

objectives
The Master's programme comprises 60 EC. The study load of each Master's course is 3 or 6 EC, whereas that of the research internship is 24 EC. If you wish to further attune the programme to your individual interests, you can include external courses, an extension of your internship, a practical internship, or a literature study. Please visit our website for a schematic of the general programme.
Moreover, the four tracks are not mutually exclusive and you are free to customize your own profile by taking a variety of elective courses. Besides lectures and seminars, the programme involves several practicals and a substantial research project on a topic of your own choice. Of course you will be supervised intensively by a staff member.

If you have a HBO bachelor's degree and want to be admitted to the master's programme Human Movement Sciences, you will have to take the HBO assessment (or premaster assessment). This assessment provides insight in the competences and skills that you need to complete the Master's programme successfully. The results of this assessment are binding. Note, however, that there is some room for compensation of lower scores on some subjects, by means of higher scores on other subjects or other criteria apart from the assessment.

You can be admitted directly to the master's programme, if you have one of the following WO bachelor's degrees:

  • Human Movement Sciences (VU Amsterdam)
  • Human Movement Sciences (RUG)
  • Health Sciences with major Human Movement Sciences (UM)
  • Medical Sciences with major Human Movement Sciences (UM)
  • Medical Sciences with major Human Movement Sciences (Radboud Universiteit)

Students with a Bachelor's degree other than Human Movement Sciences usually have to follow a premaster's programme before they can be admitted to the Master's programme. This programme comprises courses from the Bachelor's programme HMS, which are taught in Dutch. The programme usually sums up to 30 EC, but note that the actual programme may vary over students to accommodate differences in educational background.

Evidently, the Master's programme provides an excellent background for a career in both applied research and vocational higher education in sports and health.
As an embedded scientist, exercise physiologist or knowledge broker you may bridge the gap between science and these applied fields. Although management as such is not part of the programme, various alumni have taken up management or policy-making functions in sports or (mental) health care. Alternatively, you may find employment in movement-related technological industry.

In combination with clinical experience, the Master's degree also provides a good entry level to obtain an American College of Sports Medicine (ACSM) certification as an 'Exercise Specialist®'.
