Contemporary Asian Studies offers an intensive one year Master in which you explore the inside understandings of Asia, through state-of-the-art theories and lectures.

The academic approach of the Master emphasizes the key drivers of local and global changes in Asian Societies. From this perspective it's important to look at interconnections within the Asian region and between Asian societies and other parts of the world. The study programme is closely linked to the Moving Matters (MoMat) research programme which studies the flow of people, goods, power and ideas. Academic research on Asia from a social perspective is becoming increasingly important. Contemporary social science theories and debates on transnationalism, citizenship, culture, religion, development, resource conflicts, economic restructuration, mobility, and other issues, proof to be important to understand contemporary Asia, both in and beyond Asia. The Master offers the insights and knowledge into these theories and debates in order to explain many important issues that dominate today's news.

This one ­year programme starts in September. It offers thematic courses that focus on contemporary developments as well as courses on specific regions of Asia. The courses provide thorough training in new approaches to the social sciences and addresses issues related to identity, migration, development, environment, power and culture in Asia today. The programme also offers a research period in Asia or elsewhere, leading to a Master's thesis.

Applicants are expected to have sufficient knowledge of social sciences evidenced by the completion of (the equivalent of) at least 10 ECTS during previous study.

Study results obtained in previous education should demonstrate that a student is able to attain and maintain a good to excellent standard, especially in the field of Asian studies. Undergraduate studies should be completed with an overall grade average of at least a B/3.0 (American system), second class, lower division Honours degree (British system), C (ECTS system), 7.0 (Dutch system) or equivalent.

All applicants are required to submit official and final transcripts of each higher education institute attended, listing all courses and examinations already completed and currently enrolled in, and grades and credits obtained.

Applicants should have sufficient knowledge of social sciences research methodology demonstrated by the completion of (the equivalent of) at least 10 ECTS during previous study. Promising candidates with slightly less background in social sciences research methodology may be admitted provided that they complete an intensive research methodology module (in the four weeks prior to the Master's programme) offered by the Graduate School of Social Sciences. Please note that this is up to the admissions committee to decide. For more information on the intensive research methodology module, please see below.

All non­native speakers of English (including Dutch students) applying to one of the English taught programmes offered by the Graduate School of Social Sciences, are required to demonstrate proficiency in the English language. All students must be able to read textbooks, understand lectures, take part in classroom discussions and undertake written work in English. Applicants who are nationals of or who have obtained their Bachelor's degree in countries other than the United States, Australia, United Kingdom, Canada, Ireland or New Zealand are required to submit an English test score that meets specific requirements. Inability to do so will disqualify you from enrolment.

The Master's Programme in Contemporary Asian Studies seeks students with an academic Bachelor's degree (or equivalent) related to the field of social sciences, such as humanities or economics.

All applicants are required to submit a statement of motivation.
