The master's programme Mathematics focuses on analysis and number theory. From applied to fundamental research, and from algebra to data science, our master's programme spans these fields entirely.

The two-year master's programme Mathematics has two components: an analysis-oriented component with topics such as dynamical systems, differential equations, probability theory and stochastics, percolation and mathematics in the life sciences, and an algebra/geometry-oriented component with topics such as algebraic number theory, algebraic geometry, algebraic topology and cryptology. The goal of each programme is to train the student as an independent researcher, and to develop the necessary skills and proficiency to advance your career.

The master's programme in Mathematics in Leiden focuses on analysis, probability and statistics, number theory and (arithmetic) geometry. If you are looking for an opportunity to specialise in one of these areas, Leiden is an excellent possibility. Students who have obtained a Master of Science degree in Mathematics possess a thorough theoretical basis, know how to work in a multinational environment, and are able to operate well on the international market.

specialisatie Algebra, Geometry and Number Theory

Algebra, Geometry and Number Theory is the research specialisation of the MSc in Mathematics aimed at students who wish to acquire a profound knowledge of one of the areas within pure mathematics.

There is a strong theme dealing with algebra and number theory (viz. the international ALGANT study programme), as well as a strong theme dealing with topology and geometry.

Much of the contents of the courses offered in this specialisation is directly inspired by the instructors' own research. The research of the Algebra, Geometry and Number Theory cluster tries to bridge the gap between abstract theory and the world of algorithms and applications. It might be viewed as number theory in the broadest sense, ranging from discrete dynamical systems to arithmetic geometry and motives, with a strong emphasis on algebraic methods and a direct interest in the computational aspects of the theory. The cluster also has a cryptology component.

specialisatie Applied Mathematics

Applied Mathematics is the research specialisation aimed at students who wish to become thoroughly acquainted with mathematics as it is applied in various aspects of the life sciences.

The specialisation focuses on both computational and fundamental aspects of analysis and probability.
The Applied Mathematics specialisation offers courses dealing with such diverse topics as dynamical systems, representation theory, differential equations and pattern recognition. Much of the material is driven by applications in physics and especially the life sciences. In view of this, there are intensive collaborations with the Biology, Physics, and Life Sciences and Technology departments. The analysis component of this specialisation focuses on topics such as C *-algebras, percolation, and stochastic dynamics.

specialisatie Mathematics and Science-Based Business

This combination of science and business will both train you as a researcher in Mathematics and prepare you for going into industry and business.

In close co-operation with senior research staff, you will do your own research project. Courses on theory on the frontier of science will further enhance your knowledge. In a networked and case-based programme on management, business and entrepreneurship you will learn about running science-driven companies and exploiting business opportunities created in research. Your newly acquired knowledge and skills you will apply and enhance further in a company internship or business assignment.

specialisatie Mathematics and Science Communication and Society

Thia specialisation offers you the opportunity to combine previous research training with programmes in different aspects of science communication, such as journalism, new media and museology.

Students enrolling in this master's specialisation have an excellent opportunity to broaden their interests outside their own specialist field, and during an internship are able to try out the opportunities offered by a career as a science communicator or a scientific journalist. The experiences and insights gained in this specialisation will also be of benefit to those who intend to continue in an academic environment. The ability to communicate about science is an essential skill that all scientists should have mastered!

As for the mathematics component of this specialisation, there are possibilities to choose for a more analysis oriented programme, and for a more geometry/number theory oriented programme. Analysis courses focus on topics such as dynamical systems, differential equations, representation theory, percolation, pattern recognition and stochastic dynamics. Geometry/number theory courses focus on topics such as algebraic number theory, algebraic geometry, algebraic topology, cryptology and coding theory. There are no obligatory courses, and a tailor-made programme according to your wishes can be designed in consultation with the study advisor.

specialisatie Mathematics and Education

The Mathematics and Education specialisation consists of a one-year mathematically-oriented component (taught in English) and a one-year education-oriented component (taught in Dutch).

The mathematics component has a distinct dual focus on both analysis and number theory. Analysis is centred around two main research themes. First, computational science and dynamical systems, as is testified by our active participation in a broader interdisciplinary Biomathematics Group, and secondly, probability.
Number theory in Leiden is part of a broader programme including cryptology, algebra and geometry.

The education part of the programme is offered by the Leiden University Graduate School of Teaching (ICLON), and combines training in mathematics with training in didactics and education.

The mathematics study advisor is available for questions and suggestions regarding your study programme. During your final research project, you will receive personal guidance from a personal supervisor, who will monitor you very closely.
study abroad
It is possible to carry out part of the MSc programme at a University abroad. The study plan is always tailor-made and designed according to your needs and interests. This applies to all the specialisation programmes, but if you choose the Algebra, Geometry and Number Theory specialisation you will be guaranteed to spend one year at one of the Algant network universities.

The MSc Mathematics programme offers five specialisations:
Algebra, Geometry and Number Theory: follow this two year research programme to become a specialist in one of the areas within pure mathematics
  • Applied Mathematics: focus on mathematics as it is applied in various aspects of physics and the life sciences.
  • Mathematics and Education (taught partly in Dutch): prepare yourself for a career in teaching mathematics.
  • Mathematics and Science Communication and Society: combine research with programmes in different aspects of science communication, such as journalism.
  • Mathematics and Business Studies: combine training in Mathematics with an education in business and entrepreneurship.

Each specialisation may consist of master courses offered by Leiden University, courses offered by the Dutch master programme in mathematics ('Mastermath'), and courses offered by other institutions, for example the Technical University of Delft.

honours-/excellence program Leiden Leadership Programme

The Leiden Leadership Programme (LLP) is an honours programme of 15 ECs on top of the regular master's curriculum. The programme consists of training courses, seminars and a practical assignment.

Are you looking for an extra challenge in addition to your Leiden master's programme? Are you adventurous enough to look beyond the borders of your own master's programme? The Leiden Leadership Programme may be just what you are looking for. The programme gives you the opportunity to develop your leadership skills. You will follow seminars and courses, as well as carrying out a practical assignment for a company or organisation as part of a small, multidisciplinary team. Your lecturers will be leading academics and experienced professionals from the business sector.

Students can apply who have:

  • Good study results in the bachelor's programme;
  • The ambition and motivation to develop leadership qualities;
  • A broad and interdisciplinary span of interest.

studievereniging

De Leidsche Flesch
De Leidsche Flesch is de studievereniging voor Natuurkunde, Sterrenkunde, Wiskunde en Informatica. De voornaamste doelen van De Leidsche Flesch zijn het bijdragen aan het contact tussen haar leden en de wetenschap en het bijdragen aan het contact tussen de leden onderling.
Deze dingen probeert ze te realiseren door een breed scala aan activiteiten te organiseren, zoals (lunch)lezingen, excursies, studiereizen, maar ook borrels, feesten, pubquizzen en allerlei andere dingen. Verder laten we de studenten alvast kennismaken met wat er allemaal mogelijk is na hun studie: behalve oriëntatie op mogelijkheden om door te gaan in het onderzoek laten we de leden ook kennismaken met het bedrijfsleven, d.m.v. bijvoorbeeld bedrijfslezingen of inhousedagen.

Voor de eerstejaars organiseert De Leidsche Flesch elk begin van het collegejaar het eerstejaarsweekend. Dit weekend biedt eerstejaars de mogelijkheid om kennis te maken met elkaar en met de vereniging. Het eerstejaarsweekend vindt plaats in het weekend na de eerste twee collegeweken.

Verder is er bij De Leidsche Flesch de mogelijkheid om zelf dingen te organiseren door in een commissie te gaan, of je kan je aansluiten bij een gilde.

Een ander belangrijk aspect - en tevens voor velen een reden om lid te worden - van De Leidsche Flesch waar elk lid van profiteert is de boekenactie. Twee keer per jaar organiseert De Leidsche Flesch een boekenactie, waarbij alle leden hun boeken gemakkelijk en met korting via internet bij ons kunnen bestellen.

Beroepsperspectief / arbeidsmarkt

After obtaining your Master of Science degree in Mathematics, you will possess a thorough theoretical basis and knowhow about working in a multinational environment. And you will be able to operate well on the international market. Courses are taught at a high level and each of the master's tracks ends with an individual research project combined with a master thesis.
The Mathematics Master's programme is an ideal basis for a career in academia, starting for example with one of the PhD programmes at the Leiden Mathematical Institute. Alumni also work as researchers within an industrial environment, such as in Akzo-Nobel, Shell, Philips or TNO. There are also many possibilities in business. Graduates with a Mathematics degree find jobs in banks, insurance and option trading companies, communication and information technology, industry, and logistics.
