In this internationally-oriented programme students obtain in-depth knowledge about Life Science and Technology, learning to find tailored solutions for questions in chemical biology and for medicinal and pharmaceutical challenges.

During the last decades, molecular and cellular as well as chemical biology research has witnessed unprecedented progress in our understanding of fundamental cellular processes and mechanisms underlying diseases. The knowledge about genomic organization, studies on protein-protein interactions and determination, synthesis and application of molecular chemical structures and understanding of bio(medical) informatics are part of our modern understanding of health & disease.
Both chemical and life sciences related topics form the basis of the master's programme LST. The master's programme LST fits within the profiling research theme of the Leiden University: “BioScience: The Science Base of Health”. This implies that our master's students will learn to understand the molecular and structural chemical and biological aspects of disease-related processes as well as be able to apply chemical tools in treating diseases. Apart from a research-oriented specialisation there are three LST-based specialisations that train students for a future career in business, communication and education.

In this programme you will obtain in-depth knowledge about Life Science and Technology, which finds applications in innovative health care, in the pharmaceutical industry and in biotechnology.

In this two-year programme you will study such topics as genomic organisation, protein-protein interactions and the characterisation of molecular structures, which have become central in modern life science research and technology.
The programme is based on the collaboration between the internationally renowned Leiden Institute of Chemistry and the Biotechnology Institute of Delft University of Technology.

You will have the opportunity to carry out research projects in excellent research groups worldwide and in industrial situations. The high standard of education and research facilities ensure excellent career opportunities in industry, the public sector and academia.

Specialisations include Life Science Research and Development, Life Science and Education, Life Science and Science Communication and Society, Life Science-Based Business Development. Of these, the Education and Communication tracks are taught in Dutch.

The actual type of education depends on the choices made concerning the specialisation, the research area and the courses taken. A major part of the programme comprises the research project, including literature preparation and written and oral reports. The theoretical courses are mostly lecture-based, but may include assignments such as discussions, oral presentations, or essays.
The programme comprises a research training project and four compulsory courses; the exact programme depends on the chosen specialisation.
The MSc students will become a member/colleague of one of our research groups. The student choses their specialisation (Research, Communication (SCS), Education (EDU), Science-based Business (SBB)) and research training project. Based on these choices the student will be enabled to compose their personalised, tailor-made MSc programme together with their mentor. The mentor will guide and advise the student during the complete MSc program.
Students in the research specialisation spend at least 60 EC on research in one of our internationally renowned research groups in molecular or biomedical research areas within LIC, academic hospitals or the Dutch cancer institute. Based on the choice of the research training project the student will take four compulsory courses (24 EC) to strengthen the required theoretical background to support their academic training as independent scientists. In addition, students will have a choice (30 EC) from a large number of elective courses to accommodate their personal scientific interests.
The students choosing the EDU, SCS or SBB specialisation will have a reduced research program (90 – 60 EC) to accommodate their specialisation modules (30-60 EC).

The association might not be the biggest one yet, but it continues to grow. Under the control and supervision of a 5-headed board the association has a lot to offer for her students. There are regularly organized educational activities, sometimes together with sister associations in Leiden or Delft; weekly drinks in Leiden and Delft; study related lectures and excursions to companies; study trips abroad; a two-monthly magazine; a day for parents; a year book and a lot more.
All these activities are organized by committees which are formed from more than 600 members and guided by the current board of S.A. LIFE.

Life science (academic) research and business is one of the fastest growing economic activities worldwide. The aim of each programme is to train students as independent academic, and to develop the necessary skills and proficiency to advance their career in science, education, communication or science-based business.
Life Science and Technology is central to and essential for a broad range of research fields, ranging from fundamental, medicinal to pharmaceutical applications. The MSc Life Science and Technology programme thus provides students with an excellent prospective for future work in many different careers. The MSc Life Science and Technology study not only opens the door to a career in life science, biochemical, biomedical or pharmaceutical industries worldwide, but alternatively to a career as a teacher, science communicator or science policy maker. The master's degree is a stepping-stone for those graduates with the aspiration to pursue a PhD degree. Students with a desire to apply their life science knowledge outside the university have good job possibilities in R&D departments in industry, business, public utility companies, teaching, consultancy and government bodies. Many students eventually attain higher management positions. The area around the institute is the largest Bioscience Park within the Netherlands with ample job opportunities.
