specialisaties

specialisatie International Studies

This specialisation is primarily concerned with the interrelationship between global, regional and national ideas and policies, across time and space.

Our international contacts give you the chance to become acquainted with both the theoretical and practical aspects of international relations. Our interdisciplinary programme in International Studies stems from a multidisciplinary faculty, as we are firmly anchored within the humanities. Our humanities' approach makes a difference. We focus on multiple levels of analysis to bridge the gap between relations among states (international relations) and developments within states.

Real world people and policies are central to our curriculum, but we also engage with models and theories from around the world to consider how different people conceptualise global politics. Our programme therefore extends beyond the policies and institutions of the Western world, and encourages you to foster a critical and comparative approach in your study of international relations.
Most importantly, International Studies takes very seriously the cultures, the ideas and beliefs that underlie the current processes of global change.

specialisatie European Union Studies

The MA International Relations: European Union Studies specialisation at Leiden University covers the EU's broad geographical sweep from an interdisciplinary perspective.

During this Master's programme you will attend lectures by academic staff, internationally renowned in their fields and you may also choose an elective taught by a practitioner, combining academic insights with practical experience in politics, government, advisory bodies and think tanks.

The programme examines the European Union with different theories and concepts: history, economics, political science and law.

You will analyse and explore the core concerns of the European Union, an increasingly complex and fascinating political and socio-economic landscape. You will also look at the developments of post-war Europe and examine the current state of affairs within the European Union.

A highlight of the programme is the three-day trip to Brussels, where you will visit EU institutions, member states' representations and lobby groups.

During your studies you will also benefit from the close contacts between the University and national and international government institutions in The Hague, as well as the unique wealth of area studies at Leiden University.

You will engage with different trajectories of states, organisations and peoples, examining how they are manifested in power relations and interact at different points across time to order the world.

You will draw on a multiplicity of perspectives and expertise across the Area Studies of the faculty of Humanities, and examine a range of different issues, from politics and ideologies to the evolution of international law and diplomacy, the emergence of civil society and the rise on non-state actors.

The MA also explores the development of institutions such as the UN and the Asian Infrastructure Investment Bank, which structure interactions and power relations within the international system.

Lisanne van Unen
Lisanne van Unen - Student Testimonial International Relations Leiden University

I chose this master's programme because it approaches International Relations from a different perspective. I studied the same subject during my bachelor's in Groningen and a semester in Portugal, and I wanted to study it from a new angle. This master's is part of the humanities faculty. You learn to be critical of all forms of information, a valuable skill in any field.

Out of the box
In my year, many students had a bachelor's in a different field and often a different country, which made discussions more 'out of the box' and lively...
However, it is also a perfect way to combine a different background with the field of international studies.

Migration and BRIC countries
The different electives give you the opportunity to specialise in a region or field, or to broaden your knowledge. For example, I followed electives focusing on migration and on BRIC countries. The programme gives you a solid theoretical foundation, which helps you form a reasoned interpretation of the world. It inspired me to see more of it. I travelled a lot after graduating and started writing articles. I am now considering looking for a job in journalism or applying for a PhD position.

Steven Muskee - Student Testimonial International Relations Leiden University

I chose the MA in International Studies (former specialisation of International Relations) at Leiden University because it is solidly rooted in the Humanities. Its multidisciplinary approach challenged me to look beyond the traditional paradigms of the field.

Well prepared
The programme offered a wide range of electives that stimulated me to think critically about the underlying ideas and beliefs in global politics...
An internship is a great way to bridge theory and practice. After three months, the Ministry offered me a job as a media monitoring and analysis specialist.

Benefits on a daily basis
Today, I put into practice what I have learned. My improved analytical and writing capabilities as well as an in-depth knowledge of international relations truly benefit me on a daily basis in my first job.

I now comprehend international relations in a whole new way

Like my Political Science BA at the University of California, Berkeley, I expected the Master's in International Relations at Leiden University to present a similar cohort of theories and studies that would take my understanding of the world to the next level...
In addition to the core curriculum, a diverse set of electives both inside and outside the programme in International Relations allow you to focus on what interests each individual student most. Nonetheless, it is safe to say that the Master's programme in International Relations will push your boundaries and broaden your view of the world.

The Hague and Bologna
Coming to study International Relations in Leiden has its advantages past the academic as well. Proximity to The Hague, “the city of peace and justice” gives students the opportunities to go on institutional trips and visit some of the many important international bodies, such as the International Court of Justice or the OPCW. Finally, part of the attraction to the programme for me was the opportunity to study an additional year at the School for Advanced International Studies at Johns Hopkins University in Bologna to obtain a second MA degree.
