Industrial Ecology is an emerging scientific discipline that takes a systemic approach to sustainability problems. An interdisciplinary approach, integrating an engineering, environmental and social science perspective is essential for sustainable development. The Master in Industrial Ecology is a co-operation between Leiden University and Delft University of Technology. Both universities are at the forefront of the field of Industrial Ecology.

You will be guided through your study programme by the study-advisor. There will be regular contact about your individual study-plans. The study advisor will also monitor study progress and contact students when progress is found to be insufficient. Furthermore, all the teachers within the programme are researchers and they are always open for discussing possible thesis research topics.
study abroad
Students get the opportunity to study abroad. They can choose to do their Thesis Research Project (30 EC) (or Specialisation Modules) abroad. Students do need approval from the Board of Examiners for this.
The programme is designed to maximise knowledge exchange, creating a true to life environment and ultimately to prepare you for your master's thesis.
The master's programme Industrial Ecology consists of three parts, providing basic concepts and theories:

  • Natural Sciences of Industrial Ecology: Environmental science, Industrial Ecology analysis of technosphere systems and their relation with biosphere systems, in view of ecological sustainability, using tools such as Life Cycle Assessment, Material Flow Analysis, and ecological models.
  • Technical Sciences of Industrial Ecology: Design of technological systems, with a view on sustainable development, using tools from the realm of Design for Sustainability, Ecodesign, and Complex Adaptive Systems.
  • Social Sciences of Industrial Ecology: Implementation of sociotechnological systems, among others eco-industrial parks, and implementation of sustainably sound industrial practice.

With a joint-degree diploma in Industrial Ecology you are well prepared for broad array of career prospects in business, industry and government, as well as non-governmental organisations, universities and research institutes.
After graduating you are able to analyse sustainability challenges, create and initiate innovative technological solutions, and come up with tools and strategies for management and policy regarding these solutions. You will have learned to think in systems instead of individual products, processes thereby designing science based solutions for sustainability problems. You will be able to combine the analytical focus of a natural scientist with the problem-solving capacity of an engineer and reflective capacity of a social scientist.
