All Classics and Ancient Civilisations specialisations share two compulsory core courses which are geared towards connecting the various disciplines involved.
The first of these common courses, 'The Commentary', focuses on one of the most distinctive literary genres common to all five literary traditions involved and thus provides a suitable methodological background.

After this core course, you will either choose five electives specific to your specialisation, or choose one elective and spend a period of time at an academic institution abroad. Since at the Research Master's level it is customary to follow recent trends in research in the course offerings, courses may differ every year.

The second core course, 'Cultural contact in the Hellenistic world', focuses on the high degree of cultural interaction between the Western Mediterranean and the Indus Valley were that followed the conquest of Alexander the Great in the fourth century B.C.E. A comparative presentation of key phenomena resulting from the 'Hellenisation and Romanisation of the East' and the 'Orientalisation of the West'.

Elise Perotti
Elise Perotti - Student Testimonial Hebrew and Aramaic Studies Leiden University

A continuous discovery
I decided to attend the MA programme in Hebrew and Aramaic at Leiden University after a previous master's in Classics at the University of Turin, to further specialise in Semitics. I have always been fascinated by Mediterranean history and cultures. Learning ancient languages is a continuous discovery of beauty. I am glad to say that all my expectations have been fulfilled since the first class.

Becoming an independent researcher
This programme teaches students what instruments they need and how to use them in order to become independent researchers...
Students are welcome to explore the fields in which they are specifically interested and can bring them into discussion during the lessons.

Internship and PhD
At the moment, I am doing an internship in the Art, Religion and Classic Department of a prestigious publishing house, but still oriented to pursuing a PhD. These are just two of the possible employments of the knowledge obtained through these studies.
