Architecture, Urbanism and Building Sciences

The international MSc Architecture, Urbanism and Building Sciences programme at TU Delft is especially strong in design, research, management, technology and research-by-design.

The programme is underpinned by the renowned Dutch experience in architecture, spatial planning and the built environment professions, but has an international orientation drawing on the multinational faculty of staff and students. The teaching approach borrows from the Dutch tradition of working in a multi-disciplinary way with students working in groups to create integrated solutions for the built environment.

This programme sets itself apart from other architecture programmes in the diversity of directions available. Blending knowledge and skills from design practice, from the physical and social sciences, technology and engineering, this programme explores innovative ways to create more sustainable development. Students can choose between five tracks: Architecture, Urbanism, Real Estate & Housing, Building Technology and Landscape Architecture.

honours programme ""

Excellent students can participate in the two-year Honours Programme Master of 20 ECTS.

The programme focusses especially on academic research. In a 'master-apprentice' system, you will set up and carry out your own research linked to one of the current research programmes, under the personal guidance of an experienced researcher. You will carry out targeted (design) research, running parallel to your regular Master's curriculum.

Architecture

Architects play an important role in determining the design of the built environment.

It is primarily their designs that shape our cityscapes, be they residential neighbourhoods, houses, offices, shopping centres, museums, town halls, airports, stadia, or theatres. And design is the principal concern of the Architecture Track's. You will learn how to conceive of and to sketch out building projects from a scientific perspective. In so doing, you will have to strike the right balance between structure, form and function. You'll come up against both technical and social challenges.

2
track

Urbanism

The main role of the urban planner and designer is to integrate interests coming from social-cultural, economic and political perspectives with the natural conditions of the site, with the purpose to

This process is subject to both local and endogenous trends. The former include problems of congestion and mobility, urban renewal and densification, competition for limited space, and other issues of the contemporary urban development. Urban planners/designers need to respond to these local trends taking into account exogenous trends like economic globalization, the consequences of the financial crisis, climate change, demographic trends and the energy transition.

track

Building Technology

Designing and building an innovative and sustainable living environment for tomorrow's world may well be one of humanity's greatest challenges.

Society must create a physical environment to meet current needs, yet simultaneously create a sustainable legacy for future generations. This demands architectural and engineering skills across a broad spectrum. The Building Technology (BT) track prepares the master of science for this challenge. The BT specialisation covers a wide range of architecture-focused technical disciplines that lead to one of the dominant professions of the future: sustainable designer. The goal is to contribute to a sustainable built environment, climate-proof, energy-neutral, with closed material cycles.

4
track

Real Estate & Housing

Managing the built environment is a major challenge to be tackled in the 21st century.

Addressing this challenge requires detailed knowledge of real estate supply and demand, and an understanding of how to coordinate building processes and building projects. In the Real Estate & Housing Track, students gain a broad array of skills required to shape and manage our future environments: real estate management, design and construction management, and housing management. Attention will also be paid to your personal management skills.

track

Landscape Architecture

Landscape Architecture is an independent design discipline related to Urbanism and Architecture.

The landscape architect is a designer of outdoor space: from architectonic ensembles and urban spaces through to large-scale urban, rural and infrastructural landscapes. The landscape design process is a synthesis of art and technology in which consideration is given to the formal, material and cultural qualities of the site. Each project is a unique balance of geometry and geomorphology, artefact and nature, form and function. And because landscapes evolve and land use changes over time, designing with consideration for time and landscape processes is an important part of the discipline.

welk collegegeldtarief moet ik betalen?

Meestal betaal je het "wettelijk tarief".
Vereenvoudigd geldt:

job perspective

In June 2011 a questionnaire has been sent to the faculty of Architecture alumni. Almost 80% of the alumni has found a job within six months.

Many graduates from the Architecture track work in design agencies or establish offices of their own. Graduates of the Urbanism track may be involved in spatial planning, the development of metropolitan development strategies, or urban expansion or redevelopment projects. Graduates of the Real Estate and Housing track find positions with project development companies, real estate investors, housing associations, and governmental agencies at all levels. Graduates of the Building Technology track find opportunities with engineering and architectural firms, in the supply industry, and in the contracting or project development sectors. Graduates of the Landscape Architecture track are employed by agencies specialising in landscape architecture, or more generally focused architecture, urbanism and engineering firms. Graduates from all tracks may also opt for an academic career and continue their studies at the doctoral level.
