The international MSc Architecture, Urbanism and Building Sciences programme at TU Delft is especially strong in design, research, management, technology and research-by-design.

The programme is underpinned by the renowned Dutch experience in architecture, spatial planning and the built environment professions and has an international orientation drawing on the multinational faculty of staff and students. The teaching approach borrows from the Dutch tradition of working in a multi-disciplinary way with students working in groups to create integrated solutions for the built environment.

This programme sets itself apart from other architecture programmes in the diversity of directions available. Blending knowledge and skills from design practice, from the physical and social sciences, technology and engineering, this programme explores innovative ways to create more sustainable development. Students can choose between five tracks: Architecture, Urbanism, Management in the Built Environment, Building Technology and Landscape Architecture. Students are given the opportunity to design their own projects in the specialisation of their choice, supported by an excellent infrastructure of model-making facilities, studio spaces and frequent excursions, workshops and seminars.

tracks

track Architecture

Architects. Their designs shape our cityscapes - be they residential neighbourhoods, houses, offices, shopping centres, museums, town halls, airports, stadia, or theatres.

The Architecture track encourages students to develop creative and innovative building projects, using design as a means to deal with the technical, social and spatial challenges encountered in the built environment. This programme sets itself apart from other architecture programmes in the diversity of directions available. Students can choose from a range of studios, each with a different focus, from conceptual to concrete, from technical to theoretical and from building to city scales. Each studio combines teaching by academics and practitioners from leading architectural firms, including Kees Kaan, Winy Maas, Michiel Riedijk and Dick van Gameren. Students learn to adopt an integrated, design-led approach to tackle complex issues of the contemporary built environment.

track Urbanism

Integrating social-cultural, economic and political perspectives with the natural and man-made conditions of the site in order to shape and plan for more sustainable development.

That's what urban planning and designing is all about. The Urbanism track draws on the Dutch tradition of combining urban design, landscape architecture, spatial planning and engineering. Students learn to work on several scales, from regional strategic visions to neighbourhood redevelopment projects. Through these projects students learn to respond to local trends such as congestion, mobility, urban renewal, shrinkage and densification while taking into account global trends such as economic globalisation, the consequences of the financial crisis, climate change, demographic trends and the energy transition. The Urbanism track aims to provide the prospective urban planner/designer with academic skills to analyse urban environments and urban developments in a critical way and to propose new solutions for an efficient, sustainable and liveable organisation and management of the urban environment.

track Building Technology

Designing and building an innovative and sustainable living environment for tomorrow's world may well be one of humanity's greatest challenges.

The Building Technology track encompasses a broad spectrum of engineering and architectural design skills that lead to one of the dominant professions of the future: the sustainable designer. By focusing on structural, façade and climate design, students learn how to contribute to smart buildings that are sustainable, comfortable and environmentally intelligent. This programme stands out internationally because of its integration of architectural design with technical disciplines, filling the niche between architecture and engineering. Rather than focusing on one or two specialisations, students investigate the whole breadth of building technology, looking at climate design, façade design and structural design, producing designers that know how engineers work. Prospective students must show both technical and architectural skills, interest and understanding. The track is well suited to architectural graduates looking to strengthen their technical qualifications and those with a technical background that want to strengthen their design abilities.

track Management in the Built Environment

Managing the built environment is a major challenge to be tackled in the 21st century.

Students learn how to manage the urban development and construction process so as to guide the many stakeholders to achieve high quality and financially rewarding development. They learn how to manage the process at the 'object level' – that is, involving buildings and structures, as well as at the 'supply level' – involving the management of real estate portfolios and urban areas. This track sets itself apart from other Management in the Built Environment programmes in its design focus. As part of the Faculty of Architecture and the Built Environment, this programme builds on our strength in creating multidisciplinary design-based solutions. Prospective students must demonstrate a sensibility to the processes involved in the design of building projects and have a keen interest in managerial issues.

track Landscape Architecture

From architectonic ensembles and urban spaces through to large-scale urban, rural and infrastructural landscapes - the landscape architect is a designer of outdoor space.

The Landscape Architecture track deals with design through all scales as an architectonic composition of natural and artificial materials. The landscape design process is a synthesis of art and technology in which consideration is given to the formal, material and cultural qualities of the site. Students learn to see landscape as a contextual underlay for understanding, ordering and acting in spatial transformations. We emphasise the historical continuity of landscape as a process of time and flows. Situated within the Faculty of Architecture and the Built Environment, this programme focuses on landscape architecture from the context of architecture and design, urbanism and the building sciences. All aspects of the discipline are covered: from planning to design practice, from theoretical considerations to practical exercises, and from research to policy-making. Developing core design skills on real sites is the centrepiece of the programme.

honours-/excellence program Honours Programme Master

Excellent students can participate in the two-year Honours Programme Master of 20 ECTS.

The Honours Programme Master Architecture and the Built Environment focusses especially on academic research. In a 'master-apprentice' system, honours students will set up and carry out their own research linked to one of the current research programmes of the faculty, under the personal guidance of an experienced researcher. Students will carry out targeted (design) research, running parallel to their regular Master's programme.

Beroepsperspectief / arbeidsmarkt

In June 2011 a questionnaire has been sent to the faculty of Architecture alumni. Almost 80% of the alumni had found a job within six months.
Many graduates from the Architecture track work in design agencies or establish offices of their own. Graduates of the Urbanism track may be involved in spatial planning, the development of metropolitan development strategies, or urban expansion or redevelopment projects. Graduates of the Management in the Built Environment track find positions with project development companies, real estate investors, housing associations, municipalities and regional and central governments, where they may concentrate on the overall logistics of design, construction and management. Graduates of the Building Technology track find opportunities with engineering and architectural firms, in the supply industry, and in the contracting or project development sectors. Graduates of the Landscape Architecture track are employed by agencies specialising in landscape architecture, and by interdisiplinary architecture, urbanism and engineering firms and may work on the planning and design of residential, industrial, recreational, agricultural, natural and infrastructural landscapes. Graduates from all tracks may also opt for an academic career and continue their studies at the doctoral level.
