Current challenges of operations management relate to people striving to make the right decisions in complex environments while having easy access to large data repositories and being supported by the latest technologies. This programme will provide knowledge on how to master these decisions from a managerial perspective, having at the same time an understanding of the technology-related implications, opportunities, and limitations. Graduates will be introduced to data science, developing competences highly valued by today's and tomorrow's employers like data analysis, visualization, diagnostics, interpretation, and data-driven decision making.

Operations are a core aspect of any business. This programme offers insights from real operational processes and socio-technical systems in areas like logistics, manufacturing, services, energy, healthcare, and governance. Graduates learn to identify opportunities, analyse, and diagnose operations-related problems, but also to design, develop, and evaluate solutions.

Through the selection of elective courses, you can focus on the technology impact on operations in specific contexts, for example in energy, healthcare, or digitization and big data use. The programme further offers the opportunity to focus on either the Energy Focus area or the Digital Business Focus area (available from September 2019).

You can also take the programme as a double degree master with Newcastle University (17 months).

Waarom aan de RUG?

This master programme is unique in the Netherlands and in Europe. In the USA a few programmes teach operations management in direct relation to technology. There is a strong emphasis on data analysis techniques and how to use data to inform managerial decision making and improvement. Students have the opportunity to choose from various core courses from related master programmes such as Supply Chain Management, Change Management, Business administration - Health, Economic Development and Globali

Understand the language of the work floor

Graduates of the programme understand the language of the work floor and during your studies you learn how to make the theoretical issues concrete. You're trained to search for solutions to problems and to improve processes.

During the Master's phase you're thrown into the deep end almost immediately, and you're expected to try to resolve business issues together with your fellow students. After I graduate I'd really like to work in the business world. Graduates understand the language of the work floor and during your studies you learn how to make the theoretical issues concrete...
I'd really like to use this knowledge within a production company or in consultancy. During my degree I did miss attention to the social side of business life. I gained that experience by being a member of the EBF committees for the Bèta Business Days, for European Study Research and for the day organisation of the Business Congress. I've also travelled a lot and I'm a member of a student society. I think that it's very important for students to develop themselves as individuals alongside their studies.

Martin Rouby
I particularly liked the international orientation and the support provided by the University.

"After two years of work experience, I decided to continue my studies at the University of Groningen by doing the MSc in TOM, following the advice of a friend who had graduated from the programme. I have always been interested in overseeing, designing and controlling the production process and redesigning business operations. This Master's was therefore an opportunity for me to enhance my knowledge in this area of management and to achieve my career goals. I particularly liked the international orientation and the support provided by the University...
I would advise prospective Master's students to stick with it, not be discouraged by the workload and never forget they are not alone. They can always find helpful support from other students or the lecturer."
