The university accommodates excellent teaching and research facilities. Teaching and research are closely related. The research programme of Applied Physics at the University of Groningen is embedded in the Zernike Institute for Advanced Materials, which belongs to the Times Higher Education top 15 of best materials research institutes in the world.

The international environment of the programme, and especially within the research groups, is inspiring and challenging. The Master's degree programme in Applied Physics is open to students who already have a solid background in physics or applied physics, and who are eager to expand their knowledge and experience to obtain a Master's degree in a modern applied physics research environment. The programme focuses on materials engineering and device physics.

profiel General Programme

The Applied Physics Master's degree programme consists of a programme of 120 ECTS, in which you follow a number of compulsory and elective courses.

These will be followed by an industrial internship and a large, final Master's research project.
The compulsory courses of the programme (35 ECTS) consist of advanced physics courses, dealing with state-of-the-art topics in academic and industrial research. The electives (20 ECTS), the industrial internship (20 ECTS) and the final Master's research project (45 ECTS) offer you the unique opportunity to create a tailor-made programme, based on your own specific interests within Applied Physics.

The electives consist of one course (5 ECTS) that you choose from a list of Business and Management courses, in addition to three courses (15 ECTS) chosen from a list of applied physics, theoretical physics, advanced physics, advanced mathematics and chemistry/chemical engineering courses. Through your electives, you can specialize in the specific field in which you would like to do your Master's research project or take a broader perspective and choose courses in the fields that you are simply interested in. Your Master's research project is your own individual project, supervised by one of our high-quality research staff, working at one of the Netherland's most-renowned research institutes, The Zernike Institute for Advanced Materials (ZIAM). Here you can choose from research topics that range from organic solar cells, device nanophysics to materials for data storage, nano- and microelectromechanical systems (NEMS/MEMS) and laboratories on a chip.
The Industrial internship is carried out at a research laboratory in industry, within a company or institute in the Netherlands or possibly abroad. The industrial internship highlights the practical approach of the Applied Physics programme.

Exchange: All our science and engineering programmes offer study abroad possibilities at a number of partner institutions. Our partners include top-100 universities in Europe (for example in Germany, UK, and Sweden) and in the USA, China, South-East Asia, and South America. Our exchange programmes have a typical duration of one semester and count toward your final degree.
Internship: This programme offers you the opportunity to carry out an internship at a company in the Netherlands or abroad. Our choice of industry partners ranges from large multinationals (such as Shell, Philips, Unilever) to dynamic small-medium enterprises in the Groningen area. The internship has a typical duration of 3 to 4 months and counts towards your final degree.

honours-/excellence program HTSM Honours Master

For students who are interested in an extra challenge that goes beyond the Applied Physics curriculum, we offer a special honours programme: the High Tech Systems and Materials (HTSM) Honours Master.

This selective programme offers a challenging curriculum that you carry out on top of your Applied Physics degree programme. The HTSM Honours Master is organized in cooperation with Philips and other major industrial partners and its interdisciplinary programme teaches you various aspects of leadership, team work and industrial research/design.

Sufficient English proficiency on VWO level is required.

A universitary Bachelor's degree in Applied Physics, or Physics or Astronomy (to be decided by the admissions board).

Professor Francken
T.F.V. 'Professor Francken' is the study association for students of Applied Physics at the University of Groningen.
The association is named after Groningen's first ever professor of applied physics, and focuses on students and staff from the applied physics departments.
The association has more than 700 members and organizes annual events including a symposium, excursions in the Netherlands and a foreign trip, as well as more informal activities, such as regular drinks parties.

Beroepsperspectief / arbeidsmarkt

The Master's degree programme in Applied Physics is primarily meant for students who want to become researchers and developers in an industrial environment. However, many graduates continue on to a PhD project after obtaining their Master's degree, either in Groningen or elsewhere.
During the Master's degree, teamwork, communication and presentation are important qualities to be developed. In many cases considerable IT skills are developed as well. These general competences, together with the analytical skills typical of researchers, for example problem-solving abilities, guarantee that graduates are widely employable. Most applied physicists find jobs in an entrepreneurial environment where a strong background in physics is necessary.
