How can you help managers to prepare their company for the future? And how do you assure that information is useful and reliable?

The MSc Accountancy & Controlling emphasizes the importance of high quality information. In today's world, such information is crucial for all kinds of decisions. For instance, shareholders have to decide whether to continue their investment in particular companies, tax authorities must determine the amount of taxes to be paid by different organizations, and managers need to assess whether the strategy followed by their company is successful. These and other decisions have major implications for individuals, organizations and society as a whole. Therefore, they require relevant, reliable and timely information. In the MSc Accountancy & Controlling, you will learn how to design information systems which produce such information. In addition, you will learn to assess the quality of information and of information systems. Special attention will be paid to: the implications of sustainability issues for information systems, opportunities and threats due to innovations in information technology, and ways to detect fraud. Many graduates of the MSc Accountancy & Controlling further specialise by following an executive master programme.

Wherever you are, there is always a need for people to check if things add up

“In order to understand the significant added value that the MSc in A&C offers, I always rely on examples that don't appear at first to relate directly to my studies. I've undertaken a number of extra-curricular activities during my time in Groningen and it has proved very valuable for me to be educated at the academic intersection of finance, auditing and internal control...
In the words of a Dutch ambassador I once spoke to, 'Wherever you are, there is always a need for people to check if things add up'. If you are looking for a sound academic base for doing this, I would encourage you to apply for the MSc in Accountancy & Controlling.”

Marlies van Uhm. Graduate in Accountancy, working at Ernst & Young

I didn’t have to wait long to find a job after graduating. I’d already been working as an assistant accountant at Ernst & Young Groningen for two years. In May 2009, I was hired for the same position in Amsterdam. I’m currently combining that job with a training programme to become a registered accountant, for which I’m in Groningen one day a week. My job is very varied; I’m usually visiting clients in the region and so I’m rarely at the office...
It never gets boring, but I do find I have less time for the fun things I used to be able to fit in as a student. Sometimes you just have to put in as many hours as you can. An advantage is that my position closely ties in with the degree programme I studied, particularly the theoretical aspects, such as describing processes within organisations and the tools you need to audit annual accounts.

Beroepsperspectief / arbeidsmarkt

Your Master's programme is a good basis for many positions in both the private and the public sector, including the positions of auditor and controller (or management accountant). While working, you can specialize further by following an executive master programme.

Many auditors start their career at one of the Big Four auditing firms: KPMG, PricewaterhouseCoopers, Deloitte and Ernst & Young. Businesses have their annual accounts audited by this kind of firms. Auditors examine the overall organisation of the business. They get a picture of its internal controls, look at its accounting information systems and test the reliability of these systems by conducting random sample checks and data analyses. Controllers are employed by businesses themselves. Their tasks include preparing the annual accounts and other reports. They are also one of the people the auditor talks to when assessing the information systems of business. In addition, controllers are responsible for preparing budgets, making cost price calculations, assessing investment proposals and designing performance measurement systems. Strategic decision-making, IT solutions and risk management are also examples of subjects a controller deals with.

If you finished the Accountancy profile, you can combine your job with following the Executive Master programme of Accountancy (EMA). The programme lasts one and a half years and is combined with a three-year practical internship. On completion, you will be entitled to use the title Executive Master and the Dutch qualification of 'registeraccountant'. If you finished the Controlling profile, you can choose to follow the Executive Master programme of Finance and Control (EMFC). This programme lasts two years. On completion, you will be entitled to use the title Executive Master in Finance & Control and the Dutch equivalent 'registercontroller'.
