Luuk Siemes
After graduating as a physiotherapist I wanted to learn more about the human body. What processes change when we get older, or get sick? What can we do to counteract these changes and grow old healthy?

This master's taught me about movement, exercising and sports in healthy adults, sportsmen and patients with a chronic disease. We are trained how to measure the effect of an intervention with an objective method, i.e. the use of a muscle biopsy to determine the quantity of type I and type II muscle fibres in a specific muscle...
Using this approach, we explore topics in more detail. We provide feedback on reports or presentations from other students and by doing this I learn about topics I did not study and write about personally. I did my internship and thesis at the InnoSportLab® de Tongelreep in Eindhoven, where I looked at the effect of a breaststroke fin on the swimming technique of national and international swimmers. The breaststroke fin is a specific strength training tool to improve the leg's strength, resulting in a speed gain when swimming without them. After graduation I am going to work as a physiotherapist again, but with extensive knowledge about the effect of physical activity and chronic disease on health. I know how to design, implement and evaluate interventions in healthy adults or patients with chronic diseases.
