During the second semester, you will select a specialisation and write your thesis either at Maastricht University or at one of the programme's partner universities abroad.

Waarom aan de Maastricht University?

A unique feature of Maastricht University is Problem-Based Learning (PBL). Students work in small groups on an academic or practical problem. PBL is a student-centred approach to learning; your tutors are there to help you, but you are in charge of the learning process and your progress. This active approach to teaching encourages you to get involved and allows you to voice your own opinion.

ESST is a programme with a maximum number of approximately 30 students admitted annually. The European Studies on Society, Science and Technology programme offers an integrated curriculum which is based on a combination of different educational methodologies, including tutorial groups, seminars, lectures and site visits. The tutorial group is the working centre of the programme. The groups are small, and are facilitated by a tutor, but students take it in turn to chair and focus discussion.
The programme will provide you with an opportunity to study and to carry out independent research at another university in the European Inter-University Association on Society, Science, and Technology. It also prepares you to pursue a university career via a relevant PhD programme, or to work in a public or private research institute, agency, government or consultancy.
