This English-language programme teaches students how to approach the impact of new technologies on society - such as the internet, genetic engineering, nanotechnology and alternative energy.

Are you a socially conscious, critical thinker? Are you interested in politics and technology? And does the connection between innovation and society intrigue you? Then the master's European Studies on Society, Sciences and Technology (ESST) might be what you are looking for. As an ESST student, you will investigate the relationship between science, technology, and society, from a cultural, political, economic, and historical point of view.

This programme is offered together with 15 partner universities across Europe. You will spend your first semester taking courses at Maastricht University. During the second semester, you will select a specialisation and write your thesis either at Maastricht University or at one of the programme's partner universities abroad.

opbouwThe European Studies on Society, Science and Technology master's programme is divided into two semesters. The first semester is spent at Maastricht University, following a curriculum of intensive coursework. During the second semester, you will write a thesis in an area of specialisation offered by one of the partner universities in the European Inter-University Association on Society, Science and Technology. In most cases, this will involve moving to one of the partner universities in Europe.

ESST is a programme with a maximum number of approximately 30 students admitted annually. The European Studies on Society, Science and Technology programme offers an integrated curriculum which is based on a combination of different educational methodologies, including tutorial groups, seminars, lectures and site visits. The tutorial group is the working centre of the programme. The groups are small, and are facilitated by a tutor, but students take it in turn to chair and focus discussion.

The programme will provide you with an opportunity to study and to carry out independent research at another university in the European Inter-University Association on Society, Science, and Technology. It also prepares you to pursue a university career via a relevant PhD programme, or to work in a public or private research institute, agency, government or consultancy.

Following this programme means getting the most out of your studies, exploring other fields, and learning from and with other students.
If you are interested in PREMIUM, we offer you the following possibilities:

  1. You can choose an extracurricular project on which you work with a multidisciplinary team (students from all UM faculties) for approximately 3 months (about 20 hours a week).
  2. You can also choose a PREMIUM FASoS faculty project which is sort of a deepening and broadening of your master's programme. You are also expected to work about 20 hours a week.
