specialisatie Behavioural Economics

Our Behavioural Economics programme brings you the skills to optimise strategies and policies by including the framing and context that affect people's choices.

Contrary to assumptions in traditional economics, people do not automatically choose the optimal course of action, even if given proper incentives. This skills-based programme addresses the psychology of decision-making. In both mainstream and behavioural economics courses you will acquire a deep understanding of economics as well as the skills to adapt strategies and policies to deviations from rational behaviour.

You can choose between three mainstream economics tracks, corresponding with our other Economics and Business specialisations: a Financial Economics track, an Economics of Management and Organisation track and a Marketing track.

After graduation:
Alumni work in many sectors, including consultancy, finance, government and research. Assisting governments to help people make better choices or companies to identify anomalies in decision-making are common tasks.

specialisatie Economics of Markets and Organisations

Are you interested in learning how to determine the impact of market structure and organisational policies on the performance of organisations? This programme provides you with scientific tools to help organisations deal with market related challenges. In this programme, you will combine microeconomic theory with empirical techniques and practical applications. Staff draw their teaching materials from recent research and interaction with practitioners. The core courses provide a comprehensive overview of the key insights in organisational economics and industrial organisation. This includes principal-agent theory, contract theory, and contest theory.

You can customise your programme through electives. This could mean focusing on the interaction between the organisation and its environment or learning about the design of policies that affect employee performance. In seminars you will conduct short analyses, write research notes, present your findings, and participate in classroom discussions about the latest research findings.

After graduation:
Our alumni possess skills that are valuable in many industries. They become consultants, managers, analysts, controllers and HR-specialists to name just a few examples. The organisations they work in range from start-ups to large companies, nationally-oriented as well as internationally active. Examples include Mckinsey, Ahold, Stockholm University, Willis Towers Watson, Google, Roland Berger, and CoolBlue.

specialisatie Data Science and Marketing Analytics

By combining computer science and statistical expertise, this programme offers a unique mix of profound knowledge of data science methodology with a clear view of the application of these methods.

You will learn how to capitalise on the potential of Big Data by acquiring programming skills that allow you to collect, clean and analyse such data. Courses in computer and data science lay the groundwork for the more advanced seminars. The latter explore state-of-the-art machine learning methods and apply them to real-life business problems. Interesting cases that will be covered include the composition of a set of relevant products and the identification of the customer's stage in the buying process, which allows firms to provide the information that is most valuable at that stage to the customer.

After graduation:
The growing awareness of the possibilities of exploiting data science for marketing analytics in business provides graduates with excellent job prospects. All consumer-oriented firms such as those in retailing, transport, finance, healthcare and consulting will have a rapidly increasing need for your skills.

This includes a good knowledge of relevant economic theories as well as quantitative skills for carrying out independent empirical research. You will lay the foundation in core courses and apply your knowledge to real-life problems and data in the highly interactive seminars. Core courses and electives help you to get acquainted with a wide range of topics that are essential to international economics and business studies. These range from the so-called new trade theories to empirical international trade and from the instruments of trade policies to international financial markets. This provides a solid foundation for the seminars. For these intensive courses, active participation and commitment are a must. You will be expected to present excerpts of literature or case studies, ask questions, express doubts and share ideas in class discussions.

After graduation:
This specialisation prepares you for a wide range of positions and equips you with the practical and analytical tools to work and excel in the field of international economics. Our alumni work as consultants, managers in multinationals, policy advisors, bankers, researchers and employees of government or international organisations.

Our curriculum is designed to develop expertise in three key areas: product & brand management, marketing analytics and sales & account management. Marketing in the 21st century has become a multi-disciplinary activity. Development of new products and services and introducing these in current or new markets is no longer a sequential activity. It is now a joint effort of cooperating groups. This master programme is moulded accordingly. You can expect frequent group assignments, asking you to combine your group's creativity and efforts to solve cases, compile and analyse data, and formulate conclusions and recommendations.

This involves public economics, macroeconomics, microeconomics, econometrics and several electives. There are two intensive seminars in which you will become familiar with applied research techniques and have a choice between analysing policy issues or estimating modern macroeconomic models.

After graduation:
Good policy economists are scarce and your career perspectives will be excellent. After graduating you are able to work as an applied policy economist at ministries, applied research institutes, bureaus for policy analysis, and international institutions.

specialisatie Urban, Port and Transport Economics

Transport, logistics and modern cities are essential for a well-functioning economy. The Urban, Port and Transport Economics programme focuses on how to optimise these key elements of modern society.

Our lecturers are actively involved in the latest developments in international economic research, consultancy and advice. Through interactive lectures, challenging assignments and lively debates they will show you how to apply the appropriate methods – both qualitative and quantitative – when dealing with a wide range of real-life issues.
