						Are you interested in making a contribution to contemporary social challenges involving the relationship between children and youth and their guardians/educators? Do you want to help shape new policies that could improve the position, welfare and development of children, youth and their parents? Are you interested in international comparisons? Youth, Education and Society (Dutch: Maatschappelijke opvoedingsvraagstukken) is the only Master's programme in the Netherlands that focuses on the innovation of practices and policies related to children, youth and education, both nationally and internationally.

Waarom aan de UU?

This unique programme puts issues of youth and education in a global perspective by comparing Dutch youth care services and policies with their counterparts in other European countries. You can specialise in youth and education in the Netherlands or Europe, or opt for international humanitarian cooperation by choosing to do an internship in a developing country.

Rather than focusing on the provision of individual care, this degree at Utrecht University covers the full range of domains and facilities in which children are reared. It links this knowledge to contemporary social issues and takes a comparative, international perspective.

track YOUTH POLICY, EDUCATION AND PREVENTION (YEP)

In this track, you will complete an internship and focus your research on contemporary social issues in the area of childrearing and being raised within the current policy context in the Netherlands.

The new Youth Law, the Suitable Education law and the recent transition of youth policy to the municipalities play an important role in this track. In addition to the evaluation of policy, you will also focus on developing, implementing and evaluating (preventative) programmes.

track PEDAGOGY AND INTERNATIONAL DEVELOPMENT (PID)

Within this track, your internship and thesis will be focused on the pedagogical aspects of international humanitarian cooperation.

The focus within this track includes international aid that is geared towards improving the living conditions, care and educational environment of children. You will complete an internship and thesis study in an international cooperation organisation. This is usually abroad, but occasionally also in the Netherlands. To this end, we work with various partners including Unicef (in Dutch), Save the Children (in Dutch), the Liliane Fund (in Dutch) and Edukans (in Dutch). The masterclasses and practical assignments help familiarise you with this field and teach you to critically analyse how scientific knowledge can contribute to solving problems in situations marked by pedagogical underdevelopment.

track EDUCATION FOR INCLUSIVE SOCIETIES (EFIS)

This track provides you with conceptual-analytical as well as practical skills to deal with multicultural schools and classrooms as part of multi-cultural neighborhoods and societies.

The EFIS track is a collaboration between the Youth Education and Society programme, the Graduate School of Teaching, and Educational Sciences. It will prepare you to design inclusive pedagogical interventions, curricula, didactics, collaborative learning models, relational/teaching models and education policies that are needed to address increasingly diverse schools and classrooms as related to the (diverse) communities and settings they are situated in.

The track pays attention to the analysis of diversity and divergence/polarisation, inequality and social justice at a variety of levels: from the micro-educational processes in classrooms to issues of multiculturalism, the politics of diversity in democratic societies and the role of education therein

Utrecht University offers the Young Innovators programme to creative and ambitious students who are keen to put their academic skills to work for the common good.

The Young Innovators programme is focused on learning to research, design and deliver innovative and sustainable solutions to real-life societal challenges. These multifaceted challenges demand the joint efforts of experts from all sciences. In a multidisciplinary team of students and supported by leading researchers from the university's strategic research themes, you immerse yourself for a whole year in the theory and practice of innovation across the corporate, public and community sectors. The issues transcend national and cultural borders and is therefore taught in English.
