You will be part of a Research Master's programme in which you will focus on processes that are subjects of heated current societal and political debates. You will study them from a comparative and historical perspective (covering the period 1350 until 2000) and place them in the wider frameworks of the development of trade networks, the emergence of multinationals, economic growth and stagnation, and world unification.

Leiden University has a long tradition of studying migration and ethnicity and you will benefit from the expertise of a large team of enthusiastic and very diverse teachers. You will learn to understand and contribute to current debates about migration, urbanisation, globalisation, economic growth and inequality from a historical and comparative perspective. You will also analyse urban and state institutions and their effects on inclusion and exclusion, urban crime and criminal behaviour, and the development of freedoms and un-freedoms (including slavery).

  • Leiden University's History department was recently ranked 19th in the QS worldwide ranking.

Gijs Dreijer
Gijs Dreijer - Student Testimonial Migration and Global Interdependence (research) Leiden University

I started this Research MA programme because it gave me the opportunity to conduct my own research.

This particular specialisation is also attractive because it focuses on interesting contemporary issues, such as migration, economic crises and the welfare state – all subjects that interest me very much.

Challenges and solutions
A broad historical and interdisciplinary view of the challenges facing us today and tomorrow can give us a better understanding of the world, and can also help us come up with good solutions for difficult issues...
After my studies at Leiden University, I will probably look for a PhD position or another semi-academic career. The wide range of skills that I have learned in this programme will certainly help me pursue a career in research. Not only that, these skills would also certainly be useful in careers in government and international relations.

Liesbeth Rosen Jacobson - Student Testimonial Migration and Global Interdependence (research)

I have chosen to follow the two-year research master's in 'Migration and global interdependence' (currently called Cities, Migration and Global Interdependence) after my bachelor'sin Social History, because it felt like a logical continuation of my study.

I had written a bachelor's thesis on the migration of Huguenot book sellers and printers in Amsterdam and wanted to extend my knowledge on migration and integration in past times...
As a student, you are strongly encouraged to follow your own interests and the broad composition of the programme helps you to do so.

A large elaboration
I am now doing a PhD project in the same research group as where I did the research master's programme. The thorough tutorials and the master's thesis prepared the way to write my own proposal for a PhD position, a process in which my thesis supervisor helped a lot. My PhD project is essentially an elaboration of my research master's thesis. That means I can still use in my PhD project material I came across during the process of writing my thesis.

“We can only truly study migration by comparing today's immigration to immigration in the past.”

“Leiden University has a long tradition of studying migration and ethnicity. This tradition can be traced all the way back to such sources as nineteenth-century Leiden Arabist and ethnographer C. Snouck Hurgronje. What I find so interesting about Leiden is that on the one hand this tradition is continuously being further expanded on, while on the other hand, migration research is being carried out within many different disciplines (history, for example, as well as broadly outside this field)...
What I try to do is promote the collaboration as well as benefit from it.

Migration is the most important subject in current debates. If we consider migration and integration from a historical, long-term perspective, we see patterns emerging. The fear of newcomers was the same in the past, and what's more, the fate of Dutch immigrants abroad hardly differed from that of modern-day immigrants in the Netherlands. The world in the Netherlands can only be understood by also looking at the Netherlands in the world.

We can only really study migration and integration if we place the similarities and differences side by side: today's immigration has to be compared with immigration in the past, and immigration has to be compared with emigration. Migration and integration have to be placed in the wider frameworks of the development of trade networks, the emergence of multinationals, economic growth and stagnation, and world unification. Ethnicity needs to be studied in combination with gender and class, as parallel mechanisms of inclusion and exclusion, and the formation of identity. Leiden University is in my opinion the ideal place for this approach.”
