At the Leiden University Library you can access one of the oldest photo collections in the Netherlands. Learn from acclaimed scholars at Leiden University's Humanities department, as well as artists, critics, and curators.
Acquire an interdisciplinary understanding of these mediums. Explore theories and discourses and the history of lens-based media since the nineteenth century.
An exciting range of teaching methodologies include lectures, workshops, seminars, field trips and internships. Our students have done internships in organisations including New York's International Center of Photography and London's Victoria & Albert Museum.

Studieprogramma

The second semester focuses on current debates on the ontology of cinema (in relation to photography), on subjectivity, on temporality and the spatial turn, through the lecture series Contemporary Theories of Film. If you are preparing to do an an internship, we recommend you combine this with your MA thesis. You will write this thesis under the guidance of a supervisor. Students who are actively engaged in work as a photographer or documentary film-maker may submit a visual thesis as their final project.

If you intend to do an internship, it is recommended to do so in combination with the MA thesis. Interns have been placed within such organisations as the Photography Collection in Leiden, Stedelijk Museum (Amsterdam), Magnum (New York), International Center of Photography (New York), Museum of Photography (Rotterdam), The Museum of Photography (The Hague), FOAM (Amsterdam), Fotomuseum Winterthur, and Victoria & Albert Museum (London).study abroad
Students work on various projects and presentations, and they are given the opportunity to follow an internship in the Netherlands or abroad.objectives
- Interdisciplinary methods in the study of photography, film and video;
- Aesthetic, social and political theories of photography, film and video;
- Avant-garde, documentary, independent, and mainstream practices of photography, film and video
- The interconnections among photography, film and video, and other visual art practices;
- The relationship between film, photography, video and other media arts to dominant media practices, such as television or Hollywood cinema;
- Media archaeology;
- The presentation forms of photography, film and video (exhibitions, internet, publications, reviews, etc.);
- Photography, film and video as research practice;
- Strategies in the field of collecting, conservation and arts administration;
- Recent developments such as digital photography and new media.
honours-/excellence program Leiden Leadership Programme
The Leiden Leadership Programme (LLP) is an honours programme of 15 ECs on top of the regular master's curriculum. The programme consists of training courses, seminars and a practical assignment.
Are you looking for an extra challenge in addition to your Leiden master's programme? Are you adventurous enough to look beyond the borders of your own master's programme? The Leiden Leadership Programme may be just what you are looking for.
The programme gives you the opportunity to develop your leadership skills. You will follow seminars and courses, as well as carrying out a practical assignment for a company or organisation as part of a small, multidisciplinary team. Your lecturers will be leading academics and experienced professionals from the business sector.

- You should have a level of knowledge, understanding and skills equal to that of holders of a bachelor's degree from a Dutch research university in Film and Literary Studies: Film Studies; Art History, Culture Studies, Visual Anthropology or Media Studies (especially film or photography).
- You should have knowledge of and insight into analysis of film, photography and/or video comparable with those acquired upon completing one of the bachelor's programmes referred to above.
