The French-language Master's in French Literature and Culture at Leiden University offers a world-class qualification in French and Francophone literary works and genres.

This master's offers courses in all the 'traditional' canons of French literature, but also goes beyond them, with francophone literature from origins as diverse as the Caribbean and the Maghreb. Study French literature from the Middle Ages to the present, while improving your fluency in oral and written French.

With one of the broadest ranges of courses available, covering the full range of traditional and modern subjects within French Studies, you can tailor your degree to match your individual interests.

Leiden University is an international centre of expertise in the Humanities, which means that you learn from faculty who are scholars of international standing. Small classes offer a high level of individual one-on-one support and guidance. At the Leiden University Library you will find our famous collection of original manuscripts, books, and periodicals.

The Master's in French Literature and Culture programme offers a wide range of topics both literary and cultural.
A range of seminar options are offered, for example on Rabelais, Montaigne, Baudelaire, Proust and Perec, to name a few. Courses are offered on issues in French cultural and linguistic politics and on interdisciplinary issues like plurilingualism, where the study of literature and linguistics comes together.

During your master's you must choose four courses and complete an MA thesis. Two courses of your choice must be taken from French Literature and Culture. For your third course you can choose any course offered from French Literature and Culture or any course offered within the MA Literary Studies.

For your fourth course you have a great deal of flexibility. You can take any course offered from French Literature and Culture, any course within the MA Literary Studies, a course on a literary subject from another MA, a course offered within the MA French Language and Linguistics, or a course offered via Masterlanguage.

The objective of the Master's in French Literature and Culture is to equip ambitious students with the essential knowledge and skills to pursue a successful career in their chosen profession.

The development of fluency in French both oral and written, in-depth knowledge of the field, and the ability to think critically and analytically are key goals of this programme. Opportunities are provided for students to broaden their world experience and professional skills.

You should possess knowledge of and insight in French Literature and Culture, including:

  • Knowledge of and insight into the connections with French speaking regions elsewhere in the world (so-called Francophonie).
  • Knowledge of and insight into its development over the different periods (Middle Ages, Early Modern, and Modern).
  • Analytical skills needed for specifically literary analysis.
  • A well-developed awareness of the relevant scholarly skills.

A bachelor's degree from a Dutch research university in (the specialisation in) French Language and Culture, Romaanse Talen en Culturen: Franse taal en cultuur or European Languages and Cultures: French.
