I now comprehend international relations in a whole new way

Like my Political Science BA at the University of California, Berkeley, I expected the Master's in International Relations at Leiden University to present a similar cohort of theories and studies that would take my understanding of the world to the next level...
In addition to the core curriculum, a diverse set of electives both inside and outside the programme in International Relations allow you to focus on what interests each individual student most. Nonetheless, it is safe to say that the Master's programme in International Relations will push your boundaries and broaden your view of the world.

The Hague and Bologna
Coming to study International Relations in Leiden has its advantages past the academic as well. Proximity to The Hague, “the city of peace and justice” gives students the opportunities to go on institutional trips and visit some of the many important international bodies, such as the International Court of Justice or the OPCW. Finally, part of the attraction to the programme for me was the opportunity to study an additional year at the School for Advanced International Studies at Johns Hopkins University in Bologna to obtain a second MA degree.

Steven Muskee - Student Testimonial International Relations Leiden University

I chose the MA in International Studies (former specialisation of International Relations) at Leiden University because it is solidly rooted in the Humanities. Its multidisciplinary approach challenged me to look beyond the traditional paradigms of the field.

Well prepared
The programme offered a wide range of electives that stimulated me to think critically about the underlying ideas and beliefs in global politics...
An internship is a great way to bridge theory and practice. After three months, the Ministry offered me a job as a media monitoring and analysis specialist.

Benefits on a daily basis
Today, I put into practice what I have learned. My improved analytical and writing capabilities as well as an in-depth knowledge of international relations truly benefit me on a daily basis in my first job.

Lisanne van Unen - Student Testimonial International Relations Leiden University

I chose this master's programme because it approaches International Relations from a different perspective. I studied the same subject during my bachelor's in Groningen and a semester in Portugal, and I wanted to study it from a new angle. This master's is part of the humanities faculty. You learn to be critical of all forms of information, a valuable skill in any field.

Out of the box
In my year, many students had a bachelor's in a different field and often a different country, which made discussions more 'out of the box' and lively...
However, it is also a perfect way to combine a different background with the field of international studies.

Migration and BRIC countries
The different electives give you the opportunity to specialise in a region or field, or to broaden your knowledge. For example, I followed electives focusing on migration and on BRIC countries. The programme gives you a solid theoretical foundation, which helps you form a reasoned interpretation of the world. It inspired me to see more of it. I travelled a lot after graduating and started writing articles. I am now considering looking for a job in journalism or applying for a PhD position.
