						You will join a Master's programme in which you will explore how political, economic, cultural and religious contacts led to the development of regional identities and states  - all in a highly stimulating and international academic environment.

You will gain an understanding of the importance of a comparative perspective for understanding transnational processes such as imperialism, colonialism, islamisation, modernisation and globalisation.

During your studies you will have access to unique documentation centres and libraries specialising in Asia and Africa within easy reach of Leiden University – at the National Archives and the Royal Library in The Hague. You will also be part of an international cohort of students who have chosen Leiden University and the Colonial and Global History Research MA on the basis of the department's internationally acclaimed research and its Cosmopolis scholarship programme.

The programme consists of an introductory literature course , two in-depth studies of one or more areas of interest, and an MA thesis, concluded by a final exam. The MA thesis work during the second semester is supported by a Thesis seminar.

The introductory course is taught in the form of an intensive literature seminar, in which you will be given an outline of issues relevant to the particular discipline on the basis of secondary literature.

You will follow a research seminar where you will carry out research on the basis of original source materials or published documents. Besides this, you will follow an optional course to develop additional knowledge and skills or another research seminar.

The programme concludes with a thesis, and a final exam.

To broaden and deepen the students' knowledge, understanding and skills, and train them in the use of scientific methods in the field of history;
To enable students to develop the following skills:

The ability to solve academic problems independently, critically and creatively;
The ability to analyse complex problems;
The ability to clearly report academic results;

honours-/excellence program Leiden Leadership Programme

The Leiden Leadership Programme (LLP) is an honours programme of 15 ECs on top of the regular master's curriculum. The programme consists of training courses, seminars and a practical assignment.

Are you looking for an extra challenge in addition to your Leiden master's programme? Are you adventurous enough to look beyond the borders of your own master's programme? The Leiden Leadership Programme may be just what you are looking for.

The programme gives you the opportunity to develop your leadership skills. You will follow seminars and courses, as well as carrying out a practical assignment for a company or organisation as part of a small, multidisciplinary team. Your lecturers will be leading academics and experienced professionals from the business sector.

he HSVL is the historical student association of Leiden University. We organize a book sale for the bachelor and some second hand books, a variety of activities and trips within Europe. Most of the activities are linked to historical subjects, but we also organize parties and monthly drinks for some non-historical entertainment.

I have always been interested to study history with a global perspective. This programme in Colonial and Global History offers the possibility to explore the connective history between different regions and cultures.

I learned how to make use of different kinds of historical sources from the rich collections of Leiden University's library and the National Archives of the Netherlands.

New experience and insights
This programme helped me to advance my research skills and critical thinking...

Working alongside my fellow students with international backgrounds provides me new experience and insights in developing my works. I really like the design of the programme which encompasses many different topics and regions, allowing me to focus on my specialisation yet still presents the possibility to interact with other kinds of topics in the courses.

Muslim women leadership
During my last semester, I did an internship at Koninklijke Instituut van Taal Land en Volkenkunde (KITLV) and got involved in research about Muslim women leadership in Southeast Asia. I believe the research skills and connections that I have built in Leiden will help me to pursue my academic career in Indonesia.

Tom Quist - Student Testimonial Colonial and Global History Leiden University

During my Bachelor's in Leiden I already focused on pre-modern Dutch History. One year before graduating I started an internship at the National Maritime Museum in Amsterdam, where I developed an interest in the Dutch maritime past of the 17th and 18th centuries. This fascination persuaded me to opt for the specialisation in Colonial and Global History, and choose the track in Maritime History.

Deciding your own research themes
The possibility to focus on your favourite topic(s) is definitely one of the best features of the programme...

My plans for the future aren't fully shaped yet, but I would certainly grab any opportunity to continue exploring the Dutch East Indies after graduating.
