During this multidisciplinary career-relevant master's programme you will become familiar with the academic, political and societal dimensions of the governance of (in)security and crisis. You will study contemporary security challenges from both local and global points of view, gaining a deep understanding of the 'wicked problem' of security and crisis topics in a complex and globalising world. The combination of theory, practical insights and analytical skills will prepare you for work in a vast array of public or private organisations.

This one-year, English-taught programme is the only academic Master's programme that offers insights on general developments as well as the specific challenges in the field of the governance of crisis and security, with in-depth knowledge of sub-fields of crisis and security management. By selecting one track that suits your interest, you will be able to become a security professional with specialized knowledge and skills combined with a deep understanding of the general field.

Waarom aan de Universiteit Leiden?

This full-time one-year Master's programme is unique in the Netherlands because of the combination of the common courses and the track courses, and the emphasis on both academic and professional skills. There is ample room to gain in-depth and extensive knowledge and to develop vocational skills. The programme is aligned closely with the Bachelor Security Studies, but students from a wide range of disciplines are welcome to enrol.

In a world that increasingly relies on networked digital technologies, cybersecurity has become a pressing concern. In recent times, academics, governments and organisations have come to realize that cybersecurity is not only a technical issue, but also involves questions of governance and policy making, law and regulations, politics and international relations, and economics and psychology. In the track Cybersecurity Governance, you will be familiarized with the breadth, depth and complexity of cybersecurity challenges. This track seeks to provide you state-of-the art with knowledge of governance and regulatory strategies available to address these challenges. This is the only dedicated programme in the Netherlands that focuses on the governance and regulatory dimensions of this field.

In this MSc you gain the knowledge and skills necessary to become a professional researcher in a security or crisis related field; a civil servant at a security, defense, or foreign or internal affairs institution; or to be a private sector professional advising other institutions on these issues. Regardless of your focus this degree provides you with the practical and theoretical tools to tackle emerging security/crisis issues through a governance perspective.
honours-/excellence program Leiden Leadership Programme

The Leiden Leadership Programme (LLP) is an honours programme of 15 ECs on top of the regular master's curriculum. The programme consists of training courses, seminars and a practical assignment.

Are you looking for an extra challenge in addition to your Leiden master's programme? Are you adventurous enough to look beyond the borders of your own master's programme? The Leiden Leadership Programme may be just what you are looking for. The programme gives you the opportunity to develop your leadership skills. You will follow seminars and courses, as well as carrying out a practical assignment for a company or organisation as part of a small, multidisciplinary team. Your lecturers will be leading academics and experienced professionals from the business sector.

Students can apply who have:

  • Good study results in the bachelor's programme;
  • The ambition and motivation to develop leadership qualities;
  • A broad and interdisciplinary span of interest.

They will analyse and discuss security challenges and write policies or reports on a variety of security topics.
