The Master's in Politics, Society and Economy of Asia at Leiden University takes a social science approach to the study of modern or contemporary Asia.

Learn about one or more countries or regions in Asia from a wide range of disciplinary perspectives, including modern history, sociology, development economics, media studies, political science, international relations and anthropology.

Expertise on Asia at Leiden University is internationally renowned. During your master's, small classes ensure you receive plenty of individual attention and guidance from world-class academics, many of whom are at the leading edge of Asia-related research in Europe.

A flexible programme format and a wide range of electives give you the scope to customise your studies to reflect your interests or career ambitions – you can choose to focus your studies on a country, region, discipline or field.

Knowledge of an Asian language is not required for this master's, but you have the option of taking an intensive modern language course in Japanese, Indonesian, Chinese, Korean or Hindi.

The curriculum of the Master's in Politics, Society and Economy of Asia consists of compulsory core courses, electives, a research seminar and an MA thesis.
The first semester consists of the core courses 'Introduction to Asian Studies' and 'Thesis and Methods Class', which are compulsory for all students of the MA Asian Studies, and two or more elective courses.

Each elective course is grounded in one of Asia's regions and introduces the issues, debates and methodologies of one of the disciplines in modern Asian studies, such as anthropology, media and cultural studies, sociology, development studies, politics or international relations. You will also participate in a thesis research seminar class linked to one of the electives you have chosen.

In the second semester you choose further elective courses, and write your thesis in conjunction with one of these second-semester electives. Students starting in February take 'Thesis and Methods Class' in their first semester and 'Introduction to Asian Studies' in their second semester.

The objective of the Master's in Politics, Society and Economy of Asia is to equip ambitious students with the essential knowledge and skills to pursue a successful career in their chosen profession.

The development of in-depth knowledge and the ability to think critically are key goals of this programme. Opportunities are provided for students to broaden their world experience, develop fluency in a language, and gain professional skills in preparation for entering the job market.
honours-/excellence program Leiden Leadership Programme

The Leiden Leadership Programme (LLP) is an honours programme of 15 ECs on top of the regular master's curriculum. The programme consists of training courses, seminars and a practical assignment.

Are you looking for an extra challenge in addition to your Leiden master's programme? Are you adventurous enough to look beyond the borders of your own master's programme? The Leiden Leadership Programme may be just what you are looking for.

The programme gives you the opportunity to develop your leadership skills. You will follow seminars and courses, as well as carrying out a practical assignment for a company or organisation as part of a small, multidisciplinary team. Your lecturers will be leading academics and experienced professionals from the business sector.

A bachelor's degree from a Dutch research university with specialisation: Chinese Studies, Japanese Studies, Korean Studies or South and Southeast Asian Studies. Or a bachelor's degre in the field of humanities or social sciences, with components at the bachelor's level (which may include the thesis) equivalent to at least 30 credits on the politics, society and/or economy of one or more Asian countries or regions.

Our student study association SVS (Studie Vereniging Sinologie) is for Chinastudies students at the University of Leiden. We provide help for our members during their 3 year Bachelorprogram, by arranging study related activities, excursions, workshops, our student book sale and career days. Additionally we aim to make the best of our time as students, organizing many fun activities to balance out the hard working life of a student.
