In order to make it a safe and sustainable living environment, we need to monitor and understand how the earth and its climate are changing due to natural processes and human interactions, and we need to be able to responsibly extract energy and other resources.

At the MSc programme Applied Earth Sciences, you study the part of the earth system that interacts strongly with society, namely the upper crust from a few kilometres depth up to the lower atmosphere. You will develop solutions to understand, monitor and predict processes within the earth system and to utilize earth’s natural resources in a responsible and sustainable way.

The programme has been divided into 4 disciplines:

    ·Climate & Weather: modelling and predicting atmospheric and climate dynamics.·Earth Observation: advanced remote sensing techniques, geo-data analytics, geohazard and climate change monitoring and prediction.·Geo-Energy: geothermal energy, underground storage of CO2 & H2, hydrocarbon engineering. ·Geo-Resources: critical raw material modelling, zero waste extraction techniques.
During the programme you develop in-depth knowledge in one of these disciplines and get acquainted with the other disciplines as well.

<p><b>Applied Geophysics is concerned with the development and application of exploration techniques suitable for investigating the Earth’s shallow subsurface, a region of vital interest for a broad range of problems with a high societal relevance.</b> </p><p>The MSc Applied Geophysics trains students in all geophysical and related aspects of the environmental and engineering investigations of the subsurface and in the exploration and exploitation of energy, including geothermal and hydrocarbon energy. The Applied Geophysics programme is part of a joint programme run by TU Delft, ETH Zurich and RWTH Aachen, which adds an international perspective to the career prospects of students.</p>

AES is a two year MSc programme. All students start with the same modules. Hereafter, you can choose one of the disciplines in the second semester.

These offer more specialised knowledge in a particular field.

The second year offers even more flexibility and freedom of choice, providing possibilities to choose in-depth or free electives, do a multi- or interdisciplinary project in the Netherlands or abroad, and choose a cross-over module to eventually choose a research topic for your thesis.

➨ Develop novel engineering solutions for the responsible and sustainable use of Earth's natural resources.

➨ Design and implement data science and modelling techniques.

➨ Design and execute a fieldwork campaign.

➨ Work and study in an international environment.
