Important information for prospective students starting a BA or MA in September 2020

The Master of Arts degree program in North-American Studies has one track: American Studies.

Comprehensive and Challenging- Entirely taught in English by internationally-renowned faculty, the one-year Master's track in American Studies offers engaging research seminars which examine a wide range of theoretical, historical, social-political, and cultural approaches to the Americas.

Research-Focused and Flexible - Based on your academic and professional interests, you can develop your own specific profile by tailoring your research topics to your individual preferences. Your program will culminate in a Master's Dissertation exploring a relevant American Studies topic of your choice.

Practical and Cross-Cultural - You can enhance your academic experience by studying abroad or doing an internship in North or South America. Upon graduation, your subject-matter expertise in U.S. economic, political, and cultural affairs combined with your independent research and highly proficient English skills will set you apart in your future career.

The one-year, interdisciplinary and fully English-taught Master's track in American Studies offers exciting research seminars chosen form a wide range of theoretical, historical, social-political, and cultural approaches to the Americas.

Each Master's degree programme has a study advisor whom you can contact if you have questions or need advice about your degree programme and other study-related matters. Everything you discuss will be treated confidentially. If you have a more complex problem, for example study delay, a performance disability or if you are ill for a long time, you should contact a student counsellor.
In addition, you can also follow various courses at the Study Support section of the Student Service Centre (SSC), for example on study stress and holding presentations.

honours-/excellence program Master's Honours Program

The Master's Honours Program was developed especially for students who want to get more from their studies.

It is a program worth 15 ECTS that is followed in addition to the standard Master's program. It is a one-year interdisciplinary program that is designed to introduce students to various aspects of leadership.

Additional requirements English: A VWO diploma or a subject certificate for VWO English (mark 6 or higher), minimum requirement of TOEFL iBT 100 (with a minimum of 25 on writing skills), or IELTS 7 (with a minimum of 6.5 on all items). Language Centre English Test (LCET) level C1 (B2 for a maximum of 1 component). Cambridge C1 Advanced or C2 Proficiency with a minimum score of 185. If you have a VWO diploma a language test is not required.

EPU
E Pluribus Unum (EPU) is the study association for students who study American Studies. EPU's main goal is to unite all American Studies students, both from the Bachelor and Master programs. By doing so, the study association can represent the entire student body in their interests, and provide them with ample opportunities to expand those interests. EPU organizes a vast array of activities, ranging from monthly (themed) drinks to study trips abroad.

During my Master's track in American Studies I gained a lot of knowledge about the United States. I also improved my research, writing and spoken English skills. This is of great benefit in my current work for an American political consultant. I deal with transatlantic issues and developments in American politics on a daily basis.What attracted me to the Master’s track in American Studies was that you learn how to critically analyse culture, history and politics...
In my six months as Lantos Fellow I worked for Congresswoman Napolitano in the House of Representatives. It was a fantastic experience to be able to walk round right at the heart of American democracy.

I also did an exchange at Central Michigan University. This too was one of the best experiences of my studies. Although I really enjoy my current work in American politics, in the future I would like to study for a second Master’s degree at a top university in the United States.
