Do you have the ambition to become a leading translational biomedical researcher? Do you want to receive a degree from the Top-100 Universities of Groningen, Heidelberg and Uppsala? Do you belong to the top of your class? If your answer to these questions is Yes, then the International Master in Innovative Medicine (IMIM) might be for you!

The International Master in Innovative Medicine (IMIM) is a 2-year programme. As an IMIM student, you follow a tailor-made training programme at two or three EU partner universities. Additionally, you have the opportunity to do a research internship at one of IMIM's industry partners or at one of the programme's leading Latin American partner institutions.

The common thread throughout IMIM is the 'From Bench to Bedside and Back' (BBB) Learning Line. BBB helps you get a full perspective on medical sciences, ranging from the underlying basic mechanisms of disease to drug design and the clinical applications of research. The strong IMIM connection with private-sector partners further ensures that you will gain important insights into non-academic perspectives on research. On top of this, you will take part in the IMIM Spring and Summer Schools, designed to foster personal development skills and business savvy.

Waarom aan de RUG?

  • As a graduate you receive your degree from the Top-100 EU universities of Groningen, Heidelberg and Uppsala.
  • IMIM is a largely tailor-made programme in which you are largely in control of the design your own study path
  • IMIM actively includes the private sector in its programme and provides you with both an academic setting and an industry perspective on translational medicine

track International Master in Innovative Medicine

  • IMIM consists of two semesters of coursework (usually semester 1 and 3) and two semesters of research internships, one leading up to a thesis
  • The research internship in the fourth semester may take place at one of the full IMIM partners in Europe and/or Latin America or one of the private sector partners
  • One of the IMIM unique features is the integrated, 20 ECTS, Learning Line “From Bench to Bedside and Back” throughout its 4-semesters
  • All IMIM students additionally participate in a Spring and Summer School. The Spring School is related to personal development (“soft skills”). The Summer School is dedicated to “Industrial Perspectives on Innovative Medicine”, a non-academic view on translational medicine.
  • IMIM has a strong connection with the private sector, including the official participation of associated private partners

Anna Vidina
'I always seek to apply the science'

She has two more interviews with Principal Investigators of the University Medical Center Groningen as part of her study programme International Master in Innovative Medicine, or IMIM. Then Anna Vidina (22) will have to decide on a lab where to carry out her internship. ‘There are so many great researchers, that it’s hard to choose.’ The main topic of this two-year international master of excellence is the translational science. Students gain a full perspective on the medical sciences and their clinical applications. ‘From Bench to Bedside and Back, as it’s called,’ Anna explains...
‘The international aspect was important to me,’ the Latvian student says. ‘It gives me the opportunity to attend the programmes at at least two of these universities. After Groningen I will finish the master’s track in Uppsala University.’Computed tests versus cell experiments
This first semester was all about coursework and research methods. Next up: the internship. Will it be at a so called wet-lab or rather at a computational biology lab? ‘To find out, I arranged interviews with professors performing research in gene engineering and computational genetics fields. Why bioinformatics and statistics? Data analysis is certainly intriguing. By knowing the molecular interactions and kinetics within a cell, you can set up a computed test. And that means faster results compared to working in the wet-lab, an immense decrease in workload for future researchers and hopefully new breakthroughs on medicine and health practices.’Spring and summer
‘As a student of IMIM, you have to be pro-active. You have all the possible resources, but it has to come from you to make it work,’ according to Anna. So, to become this leading translational biomedical researcher which the programme promises, all IMIM students additionally participate in five-day Spring and Summer Schools at the partner universities. Anna: ‘These training weeks are designed to develop both personal and business skills. I am especially curious about how entrepreneurship and the industrial perspective on medicine and research have been taken in.’Anna’s advice for future IMIM-students:
‘Don’t let the admission requirements, application procedure and the fact that you will live in a new country scare you off. I talked about this with my fellow IMIM students, they too were somewhat intimidated to apply. But as it turned out, we were all fit for this. And so can you!’
