Or would you like to design your programme at the crossroad of different biology domains? If so, Biology in Groningen is the master's degree programme for you. If you have a broad interest in biology, you are able to design a tailor-made programme under the guidance of a staff member who will coach you throughout your master's programme.
In the master's programme Biology you can choose the Research track or you can choose the Science, Business and Policy track.
The Research track prepares you for a career in academia or other research institutes. Within this track, you will focus on conducting research by actually doing it in research projects. You will go through the entire process of conducting science in the field or the laboratory, developing skills such as exploring scientific literature, formulating hypotheses, designing and performing experiments, and presenting results. In the master's programme Biology, you are allowed and stimulated to combine disciplines such as Ecology and Evolution, Biomolecular Sciences or Marine Biology. Please note that courses and research projects in the discipline of Biomedical Sciences are faced with a strict capacity issue and therefore it is not possible to specialize in the Biomedical Sciences within the Biology Master's programme.
Within the Research track, you can also opt to follow a dedicated research track that focuses on modeling: Modelling in the Life Sciences. Mathematical modelling and computational approaches are indispensable for modern research in the life sciences and call for students with an interdisciplinary background. In this track, you will learn how mathematical concepts and methods can be used to develop and interpret dynamic models in a broad spectrum of life sciences. This knowledge can be applied to address research questions in biological disciplines like Ecology and Evolution, Molecular and Cellular Biology and Biomedical Sciences. This track offers a coherent package of courses that covers all aspects of modelling. The courses range from model development, analysis, interpretation and comparison with empirical data, implementation of simulation software and the presentation of theoretical work. At least one of the research projects will be used to implement the knowledge obtained in this track.
If you are interested in the policy and business side of science and you want to prepare for a job outside of academia, the Science, Business and Policy track might be the track for you. This track combines a six-month research training in the field of Ecology and Evolution, Biomolecular Sciences or Marine Biology with a six-month internship in a company related to the application of scientific insights in business, policy or administration.
Waarom aan de RUG?
- Combination of in-depth training and the opportunity for designing a tailor-made programme
- Specialize in Modelling in Life Sciences
- Focus on the study of causes and consequences of Animal Behaviour
- Coaching by a personal mentor
- Under certain conditions, there is a possibility to enroll into the Master's degree programme four times a year (every half-semester, please contact the academic advisor for more information about this option at academicadvisor.MScBIO@rug.nl )

track Modelling in the Life Sciences
In this track, you will learn how mathematical concepts and methods can be used to develop and interpret dynamic models in a broad spectrum of life sciences.
The knowledge can be applied to address research questions in biological disciplines like Ecology and Evolution, Molecular and cellular Biology and Biomedical Sciences. This track offers a coherent programme of courses that run from September till January:
- Mathematics in the Life Sciences (Sept-Oct) (5 EC)
- Biological modelling and model analysis (Oct-Nov) (5 EC)
- C++ for biologists (Nov) (5 EC)
- (elective) Mathematical models in Ecology and Evolution (Dec-Jan) (5 EC)
These courses cover all aspects of modelling, ranging from model development, analysis, interpretation, and comparison with empirical data, to the implementation of simulation software and the presentation of theoretical work.
The successful completion of the course “Mathematics in the Life Sciences”, which is offered in September, is necessary to be allowed entry into this track. If students fail to pass this course they still have the option to construct their own individual programme.
At least one of the research projects within this track needs to be dedicated to implement the knowledge obtained in the courses mentioned above.
profiel Research profile
The Research profile mainly consists of independent research, which focuses on learning about conducting research by actually doing it.
Students will not only independently conduct experiments, but also gain experience with related issues, such as formulating hypotheses, searching for and studying scientific literature and presenting results.

profiel Science, Business and Policy
Interested in the business side of science? You can combine this Master's programme with the Science Business & Policy profile. The SBP profile includes a six-month internship as a scientific advisor.

GLV Idun
GLV Idun is the study association for the bachelor and the master students studying in the Life Sciences at the University of Groningen. As a study association we have a big and vibrant student society which organizes activities for students by students. If you are interested in joining social, educational or career activities you are at the right place with us. Because we organize over 175 activities in a year. To just name a few in our wide range of activities: the first year introduction camp, our monthly parties, weekly drinks on campus, exam support sessions, symposia, trips abroad and company visits.
But if you want to do more than just join these activities, you can also become part of one of our 20 committees and organize these events together with a group of committee members. As an association we are constantly searching for new members that feel passionate about taking up the responsibility of organizing activities and join a committee.
