Are you inquisitive, curious and open-minded? Are you interested in how science, arts and technology contribute to modern culture? And would you like to pursue an academic career in this challenging field? Then you should consider getting a research master's in Cultures of Art, Science and Technology (CAST). This one-of-a-kind programme examines the different ways in which the seemingly separate and contrasting fields converge: the sciences are object of cultural critique in the arts, the arts continuously incorporate new technologies and both the sciences and the arts 'imagine' our culture's future. The programme combines the study of relevant theories from history, sociology, philosophy and qualitative social sciences with training in the application of different scientific methods such as archival research, discourse analysis and ethnographic observation. This ensures that you will gain all the experience you need to find work as an interdisciplinary researcher at a university or knowledge institute. The Research Master was accredited by the Dutch-Flemish Accrediation organisation and received an exceptional score of 'good'.
Interview with Prof. Wiebe Bijker about the research master Cultures of Arts, Science and Technology
Waarom aan de Maastricht University?
A unique feature of Maastricht University is Problem-Based Learning (PBL). Students work in small groups on an academic or practical problem. PBL is a student-centred approach to learning; your teachers are there to help you along, but you are in charge of the learning process. This active approach to teaching encourages you to get involved and allows you to voice your own opinion.
The Research Master in Cultures of Arts, Science and Technology is a selective, highly reputed and one-of-a-kind programme. In two years, it trains young academics to conduct research in line with the current best practices. You write papers and proposals, work closely with faculty research staff on their projects, and gain a general 'behind-the-scenes' look at how academic research is actually done.Studieprogramma

CAST offers a combination of educational methods within the framework of Problem-Based Learning, such as tutorial groups, lectures, master classes, project work and research seminars.
The programme relies on the master-apprentice model to familiarise you with the latest methods in doing research, and you learn by doing. You will also participate in the regular research seminars of the faculty, giving you a ‘behind the scenes’ look at the practice of a large research institute.
doelstelling
Upon graduation, you will have acquired outstanding skills and you will be able to contribute as an interdisciplinary researcher in a university or knowledge institute.
Through rigorous training in theory and methodology, combined with focus on topics of your own choice, you develop both flexibility and specialisation to address the urgent questions of today. This has enabled many graduates to find interesting jobs. Eighty percent of the CAST students find a job within a year of their graduation, and many go on to PhD programmes. Others find work with government agencies, advisory boards, commercial companies and NGOs.In June 2015, the CAST staff conducted a survey amongst the programme’s graduates. Out of the 68 graduates, 66 had found paid employment. Nearly 70 percent of them work in research positions at universities or knowledge institutes. The others work in advisory boards, companies that require expertise of research and development, and organisations focusing on health, education, media, art and culture. Given the CAST graduates’ excellent prospects for jobs and the academic reputation of the programme, it offers value for money, especially for students used to high fees in their home countries.
