The International Bachelor Arts and Culture Studies in Rotterdam offers a unique approach to arts and culture. You will study the world of arts and culture from a sociological and economic view, but you will also be familiarised with theories on media, policy, marketing and aesthetics.

As an International Bachelor Arts and Culture Studies student you’ll learn to answer questions such as: Why does one listen to Dua Lipa, while other loves Beethoven? And how come some have both in their playlist? What do the budget cuts on arts and culture mean for the way the sector is organised? Who decides about the worth of art and how it is presented to the public?

We study the world of art. In this world, creativity, innovation and entrepreneurship are key concepts. These characteristics do not only apply to artists, they are also increasingly essential for you, the future arts and culture specialist that engages with art and culture behind the scenes.

And did you know that you can also combine IBACS with a programme at the Willem de Kooning Academy or Codarts? The Dual Degree RASL is perfect for those who want to simultaneously practice and study the arts.

Studying Arts and Culture in Rotterdam - Erasmus University Rotterdam

Waarom aan de Erasmus?

The International Bachelor Arts and Culture Studies is unique in its multifaced approach to arts and culture. You will approach art and culture from different angles, such as sociology and economy, and theories about media, policy, organisations and audiences. This helps you to answer questions such as 'When do we call something 'kitsch'?'. Besides building a theoretical foundation, you will also put your broad knowledge about the arts and culture into practice during the compulsory internship.
Five reasons to choose for IBACS at the EUR

  • you are looking for a programme of which the main focus is not the history of arts and culture , but for a programme that focuses on the economy, politics and sociology behind arts and culture;
  • with the help of an internship embedded in your study programme you will already experience how it is to work as a professional in the arts and culture world;
  • especially in arts and culture it is important to see the bigger picture. This is why the programme applies an international approach. This means that the discussed perspectives on arts and culture are compared with each other on an international level;
  • do you have an artistic talent, as well as a hunger for academic knowledge? You can combine IBACS with a programme at the Willem de Kooning Academy or Codarts;
  • did we already tell you how much fun Rotterdam is? Rotterdam is innovative and diverse: the pop-up initiatives are flourishing like never before. The ideal environment for young culture lovers with big plans!

afstudeerrichtingen

afstudeerrichting Culture and Economics

In the specialist field Culture and Economics, you study the art world from a cultural economic perspective.

Artists, art and cultural institutions and the public all have to deal with economics and organisation. In the cultural sector, plans are made, events and products are organised, designed, sold and purchased.
The government, among other parties, plays an important role through its policy and decisions about whether or not to provide funding. In the specialist field Culture and Economics, you study the art world from this cultural economic perspective. This is a typical Rotterdam approach to arts and culture studies.

The second and third years of the programme build on the economic subjects studied in the first year. The economic and business aspects of culture are addressed at different levels: at the level of the individual artist, the cultural organisation, the employment market and the government.

afstudeerrichting Culture and Society

When choosing the 'Culture and Society'-track you get acquainted with up-to-date sociological theories and will develop relevant research skills in studying these art worlds.

Art does not simply reflect society or shape human behaviour, but is actively constructed by people within so-called art worlds - networks of creators, producers, and distributers who collectively decide what art is (not), and which art eventually reaches out to the broader public. When choosing the 'Culture and Society'-track you learn to investigate how artists and their audiences interact, which role gatekeepers are playing in selecting artistic works, and which strategies cultural industries, cultural organizations and governments develop to steer artistic processes via the market or policy. You also study how and why different groups of people participate in art worlds (as creators themselves or as consumers), and how the boundaries between consumers and creators are fading due to technological developments such as digitization, changing the interrelationships and the (often unwritten) rules that shape art worlds. In doing so, you get all the knowledge and knowhow necessary to become a professional in one of the art worlds - film, visual art, architecture, popular music, etc. - yourself, or to develop an academic career in the sociology of art and culture.

afstudeerrichting Culture and Media

Central to this specialisation are the creation, distribution and consumption of various media and media products and the role of media in the communication of culture.

Cultural industries, media, broadcasters, film, music and the Internet play an important role in the political, social and cultural life and are becoming increasingly important in the cultural economy.

How have different media sectors (such as the broadcasting sector, the printed press and the Internet) developed in recent decades and what changes and dilemmas do they currently face? How are media products created and how do readers, viewers and listeners use these products? What role does the media play in processes of cultural communication and in shaping the perception of art and culture?

honours-/excellence program Arts and Culture Honours Programme

Provides an deeper insight into the subjects 'race and ethnicity in arts and culture', 'curation and intermediaries in the cultural and creative industries' and 'aesthetics and sociology of art'.

The honours program aims at deepening and broadening the subject material of our regular curriculum. This takes place by an in-depth reading of a number of academic texts, discussing these works with the lecturer and fellow students, and producing a paper or other type of report or presentation at the end of each theme. Each lecturer involved is responsible for three seminars dealing with a current topic in her or his area of expertise. Finally, students will do a project embedded within a (Rotterdam) arts organization and present their findings at a final symposium.

The sessions will focus on the subjects: 'race and ethnicity in arts and culture', 'curation and intermediaries in the cultural and creative industries' and 'aesthetics and sociology of art'.
