Students will receive academic training on all aspects of the relation between Nutrition and Health, including the biomedical aspects of metabolism, epidemiology and public health nutrition.

The history of the Nutrition & Health programme at Wageningen University goes back over 45 years; it is considered to be one of the best and most innovative programmes in its field in Europe. Research in Nutrition and Health in Wageningen covers all areas within the field. From advanced Nutrigenomics research (member of EU-network of excellence), to sociological considerations of Nutrition behaviour, Wageningen studies Nutrition & Health at the (sub)cellular, individual and population level. Moreover, close co-operation with other MSc-programmes in Wageningen, allow students to operate on the interface of Nutrition with other disciplines. Examples can be found in Master-theses supervised in colaboration between the divisions of Human Nutrition and Communication Sciences. Cooperation between the Laboratory of biochemistry and the molecular nutrition group is another example. Because the field of Nutrition & Health is a very broad field, students are required to choose one of the specialisations offered within the programme.

specialisatie Epidemiology and Public Health

Epidemiologists try to determine causal relationships in large groups of people,such as the elderly or people with cardiovascular problems, between food, lifestyle and the development of diseases.

Research results act as starting points for health advice and lead to a greater understanding of cause and effect. If it is known that certain behaviour leads to a disease, then you can do research into impacting that behaviour, and measuring its effectiveness. The acquired knowledge can be used in health policy making and intervention programmes in both developing and developed countries. You will be helping to improve the overall health of people and may be able to prevent food-related diseases from developing.

specialisatie Nutritional Physiology and Health Status

What is the influence of food on the functioning of the body? In this specialisation, you will research various age groups and situations, such as growth, pregnancy, and food consumption behaviour.

You will also review special situations including serious diseases (clinical food), or during sports and activity.
You may also research the food consumption behaviour and habits of individuals and how you may be able to influence that, for example, through portion sizes. The focus of this research will be on people in certain life stages and per geographical regions. You can also study the methods to precisely measure food consumption.
In short, you will review different aspects and will learn what the effects are of food consumption patterns and the physiological processes on the body and what that means for the status of its health and illness.

specialisatie Molecular Nutrition and Toxicology

Do you want to know what happens exactly in the body? What do fat cells do and how do they influence our health? Why are certain substances healthy or unhealthy?

The answers to these type of questions can be found by delving at the lowest levels: cells and DNA. You will learn to use techniques, at molecular and cellular levels, to discover the mechanism driving the relationship between food and health.

specialisatie Sensory Science

This specialisation is positioned at the interface of the Food Technology and the Nutrition and Health programme.

This is in line with the research in the sensory science field, which is focused on the interaction between the human observer and product properties.

specialisatie Nutritional Epidemioloy and Public Health (online master specialisation)



The online master specialisation is designed as a part-time study with an approximate workload of 20 hours per week and therefore enables students to combine work and study. It is therefore also suitable for employees that want to continue their education in the sense of life-long-learning. The general structure is that the students will follow a 2 year online course-programme part time and after that continue with a tailor-made internship and master thesis.
