Questions of globalisation, identity and authenticity, migration, citizenship, but also of transnational relations, development, and myths of progress are at the heart of the Master's programme in Cultural and Social Anthropology. This programme is designed to transform you into an active participant in the production of anthropological knowledge and the principles and practices of the discipline. As an anthropologist, you will investigate your carefully formulated research question by means of ethnographic fieldwork and relevant comparisons.

The UvA programme in Anthropology is a broad, one-year programme in which you design and conduct your own high quality anthropological research. After completing a period of twelve weeks of fieldwork, you are expected to write a well-argued thesis.

Studieprogramma

The Master's programme consists of three stages: designing your research project, conducting fieldwork and writing your thesis.

In all three stages, you will be supervised individually by a member of the academic teaching staff. You will also receive collective support in group seminars, although your main focus will be on your own research.

aanvullende vakeisen
The above-mentioned related disciplines should include a substantial number of courses in anthropology, including a one semester (or trimester) course in anthropological theory completed with a good grade. Generally, students from related fields are well enough prepared when they have earned about 60 ECTS in Anthropology. The courses of such a background need to consist of a mixture of introductory courses, theoretical overview courses and specialized courses.

cijferlijst
All applicants are required to submit official and final transcripts of each higher education institute attended, listing all courses and examinations already completed and currently enrolled in, and grades and credits obtained.

basiskennis
Applicants should have a solid basis in both qualitative and (less important) quantitative social sciences research methodology reflected by the completion of at least (an equivalent of) 20 ECTS during previous study.

taaltoets
As the Master's programme will be highly demanding and fully taught in English, a high level of English language proficiency is expected of all applicants. All students must be able to read textbooks, understand lectures, take part in classroom discussions and give presentations in English.
To ensure the quality of education and to safeguard students from failing their studies or slowing down class interactions, all non-native speakers need to demonstrate their proficiency in English before enrolment. All applicants who are nationals of countries other than Australia, Canada, Ireland, United Kingdom, United States of America or New Zealand are required to submit an English test score that meets specific requirements. Inability to do so will disqualify them from enrolment.

vooropleiding
Students with a Bachelor's degree in Anthropology or in another closely related discipline (such as social sciences or humanities) are invited to apply, provided they meet all other entry requirements.
