Deze opleiding

This unique Master's gives you a broad, solid foundation of international legal knowledge and the chance to specialise in such areas as human rights, the environment and law of the sea.

Do you wish to pursue an international legal career that makes a difference? Are you interested in international peace and security, human rights, international environmental law and law of the sea? In the intensive one year LLM Public International Law you will explore common themes of public international law with the option to take a specialisation in Human Rights or Environment and Law of the Sea.
In this programme you'll work closely with your lecturers - legal experts who are often involved in professional practice - and your classmates, international students with whom you'll collaborate throughout the year. The theory presented in compulsory and elective courses is enhanced by practical experience. You'll participate in a moot court, and will have a chance to visit a variety of international courts within the Netherlands, so you gain familiarity with the international legal environment.

'Our lecturers have a unique hands-on approach, helping students to get the most out of themselves. They coach students participating in international moot courts, and involve them in on-going research.' - Prof. Cedric Ryngaert

specialisatie Environment and Law of the Sea

Oceans are essential for maintaining life on earth and are increasingly important to the world economy; 90% of all international trade is seaborne. Air pollution, water pollution, the degradation of the oceans and their living resources, climate change, ozone depletion, international trade in hazardous waste, piracy and irregular migration are only a few examples of the issues that are addressed by the Environment and Law of the Sea specialisation, which offers the courses International environmental law and International law of the sea.

These courses will teach you significant knowledge of, and insight in the international environmental law and law of the sea. They will enable you to formulate informed opinions on, participate in and contribute to the debate concerning the future of environmental and oceans governance. The lecturers of the courses are senior researchers of the Netherlands Institute for the Law of the Sea (NILOS) and have hands-on experience with the international environmental law, law of the sea and oceans governance.

specialisatie Human Rights

How can we address human rights violations committed not only by states, but also by international organizations or individuals? Where do human rights come from and are they universal? Utrecht's exciting human rights track offers wide opportunities to study these issues in-depth under the guidance of the experienced and international staff of the Netherlands Institute of Human Rights (SIM). In two key courses (Human Rights I and II) you will learn about both the institutions protecting human rights, the principles underlying them, and the substance of those rights. In the Capita Selecta courses you will be able to deepen your knowledge and skills on specific key challenges for human rights of your choice, including transitional justice and gender. By choosing this track within the wider public international law programme, studying human rights in Utrecht allows you to acquire both the broad overview and skills of a generalist and the in-depth knowledge of a specialist – the combination is a key asset for your future!
