Deze opleiding

This Master's programme familiarises you with issues of research design and data collection, analysis methods and statistical tools as applied to behavioural, biomedical and social sciences.

The field of methodology and statistics is by its nature interdisciplinary, as it relates to all fields of behavioural, biomedical and social research. Social science methodology concentrates on central issues in research design and data collection, with the aim of improving the quality of empirical research. In addition, the complex theories and research designs currently used call for advanced analysis methods, which in turn require mastery of the statistical foundations of these methods, and training in their skilled use. Finally, there are strong interconnections between methodology and statistics. Modern social, biomedical and behavioural research uses highly advanced quantitative methods, while, at the same time, no amount of statistics can compensate for fundamental flaws in a study's design or data collection.

Waarom aan de Utrecht?

This programme is the only two-year, NVAO-accredited Research Master in Methods and Statistics for the Behavioural, Biomedical, and Social Sciences in the Netherlands. In addition, in the 'Keuzegids 2015 Masters' this research master's programme is rated as a Top Rated Programme, based among others on the National Student Survey.
Appreciate our the small classes and the very approachable teachers and supervisors. The learning environment is interactive with explicit attention to skills in scientific communication, oral presentation, discussion and research ethics. This master gives you the opportunity to experience the research culture at two universities, Utrecht and Twente. You will visit locations and learn to cooperate and work at a professional level using multimedia applications.

In our highly data-driven society, the need for statistics will increase. The combined research expertise of the three departments results in an exceptionally broad choice of traineeship opportunities and thesis topics. The departments have links with TNO, CITO, CBS, CBG-MEB, Danone, Medisch Spectrum Twente, MSD, Abbott and RIVM. These connections provide an excellent network that will be very helpful in your further career.

EUROPEAN MASTER IN OFFICIAL STATISTICS (EMOS)
The European Master in Official Statistics (EMOS) is a project aimed at developing training and education in Official Statistics within existing Master programmes at European universities. We are the only Dutch University that has been awarded a EMOS label.

opbouw
In the first year, you will gain a strong foundation in research methodology and applied statistics. You will also explore how methodology and statistics can contribute to research performed in the behavioural, biomedical, and social sciences.
In the second year, you will start to specialise in the research area that interests you most. Typically, this will be in a collaborative project with other disciplines/organisations, where you will prepare for and write a thesis. You can choose to follow one of the offered set tracks, or you can pursue your own, free track. If desired, you can go abroad for this part of your programme. In addition, you will be involved in the statistical consultancy activities of our departments.

tracks

  1. Free trackIn the second year, students can choose an elective course and corresponding (preparation for) thesis in their own field of interest. It is encouraged that students follow their own interests.
  2. Survey trackThis track contains electives taught by PhD-credentialed staff members from Statistics Netherlands, CentERData, diverse market research companies, and the municipality of Amsterdam.
  3. Educational measurement trackThe educational measurement track offers electives (and corresponding internships and theses topics) taught by PhD-credentialed staff members from CITO and RCEC.
  4. Biomedical trackA biomedical track can be constructed by following courses from the master Epidemiology and writing a thesis under the supervision of members of the department of biostatistics, at the UMC, UU.

cijfergemiddelde
Students with a GPA of 3.4 (or the Dutch equivalent of 7.5) or higher are eligable. Students with a GPA between 3.0 and 3.4 (Dutch equivalent: 7 or better) may be eligible and can compensate by other capacities they possess, according to the programme's Admissions Committee.

basiskennis
This research master programme has a statistical entrance requirement, which entails the following:

(i) a basic course in introductory statistics including topics such: univariate descriptive statistics, correlation, univariate regression, one-way analysis of variance (both descriptive and inferential) and a basic course in the methodology of behavioural and/or social science research (experimentation, surveys, observational studies);
(ii) knowledge of multivariate analysis tools such as factor analysis, reliability, multiple regression, analysis of variance, dummy variables;
(iii) hands on experience with the tools just mentioned (for example, experience with SPSS).

In total, it is expected that students have followed courses for about 20 ECTS. If either (ii) or (iii) is (partly) lacking, this can be remedied in a course of multivariate analysis offered by the Summer School of Utrecht University.

vooropleiding
This programme is open for students with a Bachelor's degree in Biomedical Science, Social and Behavioural Sciences (including Political Science), Econometrics and /or (Applied) Mathematics that equals the Dutch equivalent.

motivatiebrief
We ask for a motivational letter including curriculum vitae.

Beroepsperspectief / arbeidsmarkt

Utrecht University maintains strong partnerships with various non-academic institutions, which provides excellent career prospects for our students. The majority of our graduates obtain positions as PhD students either in one of the three departments that coordinate this Master's programme or in other related departments in the Netherlands or abroad.
Some graduates have chosen non-academic careers. For example, many work at CITO and Statistics Netherlands as statistical consultants or have teaching jobs at the University. Through the development of specialisation tracks, Utrecht University has reinforced connections with non-academic institutions that are potential employers of our students. Thus, we are creating improved job opportunities for our students at institutions like CITO, RCEC, CentERData, Statistics Netherlands, TNO, and UMCU.
