Innovation Sciences is the study of how new technologies are transformed into marketable innovations, explaining how innovation and innovation systems work.

This two-year Master's programme focuses on the dynamics of emerging technologies and innovation. After completing the programme, students will be able to link new technologies to human and economic wants and needs, as well as to the grand societal challenges. What does innovation mean for economic growth, welfare, health care, climate change, energy security, mobility and sustainability?

This programme will be of particular interest to students with a background in technology, health, life sciences, natural sciences or industrial engineering that wish to extend their technical background with knowledge about innovation management and social processes. Moreover, the programme is also of interest to talented students with a background in the social sciences (for example: economics, economics geography, entrepreneurship or business) that have demonstrated an affiliation with science and technology. Innovation Sciences students may want to pursue a career in high-level consultancy, strategic research and development (R&D) management, policymaking, entrepreneurship,or academic research.

Students expand their theoretical and analytical knowledge base and learn about innovation through practice. Students are taking courses throughout the whole first year and the beginning of the second year. In the first year, students will be trained in innovation theories and social science research methods to teach them how to analyse complex innovation processes and develop innovation strategies. There are four kinds of courses in the programme: conceptualising innovation through theories and models, innovation research methods, innovation practices and elective courses.
Innovation theories
You will follow three courses on a wide range of dominant innovation theories. These theories will provide insights into the mechanisms responsible for technological dynamics, the innovative behaviour of companies and institutions in a broader innovation system.

Innovation research methods
Three innovation research methodology courses will give you the tools you need to understand and tackle innovation challenges. You will learn both quantitative and qualitative methods.

Innovation practices
To help you plan the right interventions and strategies, you will learn how to understand innovation processes in practice throughout the programme. You will also learn skills to communicate your expertise to different audiences, such as by presenting, writing a policy report and online publication.

Elective courses
The curriculum offers you two elective courses so you can personalise your programme. You can take courses from other Master's programmes, or courses at other universities.

Master's thesis
Most of your second year will be spent on your Master's thesis for which you will work on your individual thesis/internship project, specialising in your field of interest.

2e jaar The second year is dedicated to individual specialization. Students take elective courses in their field of interest and write their Master's thesis, based on an optional internship or a scientific project.

instruction modes
The majority of the examinations are case study reports about real life cases. In the theory related courses, knowledge is also evaluated by exams. The practical oriented courses have scientific and consultancy oriented reports and articles as their end results.
The aim of this programme is to give students an insight into the nature of technological change and the conditions affecting knowledge production. It also aims to provide understanding of the societal uptake of innovations and the role of company networks, research institutes, governments, and other stakeholders.

The elective courses in the curriculum give students the opportunity to personalize the programme. Students can take courses from other Master's programmes at Utrecht University, or courses at other universities. Students may also conduct their Master's thesis research at a university in or outside the Netherlands, as well as at a research institute, consultancy or the like.

This programme offers students the well-suited training to work as an innovation specialist. Students can pursue a career in high-level consultancy, strategic policy making, R&D management, entrepreneurship or academic research. The ability to integrate science and social science in thorough analysis of complex, multidisciplinary societal challenges makes students well suited for jobs that demand the ability to have a broad systemic overview of complex issues, such as innovation.
Graduates end up in a variety of sectors; from working for the government to a more business oriented career path. It is also common to become an consultant or analyst, but many alumni are also directly involved in the management of innovation processes within firms or public bodies.
