The Master's in Educational Sciences: Learning in Interaction addresses the theory, use and effects of innovative educational developments aimed at making learning more meaningful and enjoyable.

We never learn alone. We always learn by interacting with someone or something: For example, with more knowledgeable others (teachers or more advanced fellow students), equally knowledgeable others (peers or in teams), or with artefacts (the environment around us, books or computers). If you're interested in learning about and carrying out high-quality research into these interactions so that you can make a real difference to learning, teaching and instruction, then this is the programme for you. The two-year programme concentrates on the theory, use and effects of innovative teaching and learning arrangements aimed at meaningful, enjoyable learning through the application of different theories, paradigms and media. Research projects use both experimental and design-based approaches and combine qualitative and quantitative analyses. Looking for more information? Waarom aan de Utrecht?

According to the Keuzegids Masters, this programme was the Best University Master in the Pedagogical and Educational Sciences in 2010, 2011, 2012, and 2013. In 2014, the programme received an overall score of 4.53 on a five-point scale in the NSE. Highly positive evaluations were given of the scientific skills acquired (4.65), the quality of the teachers (4.47), the degree of freedom of choice (4.71), and the general atmosphere (4.76).
This Master's programme combines high-level coursework with hands-on research skills and competency development. Throughout the programme, various electronic learning environments are used to support you in your collaborative study assignments, allowing you to experiment with innovative learning and instructional tools.

The Master's programme in Educational Sciences: Learning in Interaction offers you distinct benefits, including:

De Master's Open Day van de Universiteit Utrecht is op vrijdag 9 februari 2018. Tijdens deze avond geven vrijwel alle masterprogramma's van de universiteit voorlichting. Van 13:30 uur tot 18:15 uur op diverse locaties in de binnenstad, op de internationale campus en op het Utrecht Science Park.

Students take courses on different learning and instruction theories, and are trained in advanced statistics. A 'master class' focuses on developing academic skills, while participating in a research project of a senior faculty member introduces each student to 'hands-on' research work. Additional to the master's thesis, students also have the opportunity to write a proposal for a research grant.
In your first year, the emphasis is on acquiring general theoretical knowledge of education and learning, and on integrating theories from the theoretical courses with methods from the methodology and statistics courses in assignments during the research practicals. You will follow theory courses on learning, neuroscience, teaching, and learning and behavioural problems. You will also follow four methodological courses.

In your second year, the emphasis is on applying theoretical and research skills in designing and evaluating learning environments, and in conducting research in the field of education and learning. You will follow one theory course on interaction in learning environments, two elective courses, and two research seminars. You will also write your Master's thesis.

We ask for a GPA of 3.4. Students with a GPA between 3.0 and 3.4 may be eligible and will have a chance of being selected if their previous studies fit well within the programme, according to the programme's admissions committee.

This research master programme has a statistical entrance requirement, which entails the following:

(i) a basic course in introductory statistics including topics such: univariate descriptive statistics, correlation, univariate regression, one-way analysis of variance (both descriptive and inferential) and a basic course in the methodology of behavioural and/or social science research (experimentation, surveys, observational studies);
(ii) knowledge of multivariate analysis tools such as factor analysis, reliability, multiple regression, analysis of variance, dummy variables;
(iii) hands on experience with the tools just mentioned (for example, experience with SPSS).

In total, it is expected that students have followed courses for about 20 ECTS. If either (ii) or (iii) is (partly) lacking, this can be remedied in a course of multivariate analysis offered by the Summer School of Utrecht University.
