Of neem augmented reality naar een niveau waar het echt zou kunnen helpen bij het oplossen van problemen in de echte wereld. Dit zijn slechts enkele van de vele toepassingen die mogelijk zijn gemaakt door geo-informatiewetenschappen en aardobservatie (GEO).

Geo-informatie is een snel groeiende industrie wereldwijd. Geografische informatiesystemen (GIS) en remote sensing (RS) instrumenten kunnen worden gebruikt voor het oplossen van wereldproblemen en complexe vraagstukken met betrekking tot de gezondheidszorg, voedselzekerheid, klimaat, water, stedelijke planning, veiligheid en land schaarste. Natural Hazards and Disaster Risk Reduction



Earthquakes, volcanic eruptions and extreme weather are triggers for disasters in many parts of the world. The effects of climate change and of cities that keep on growing bigger and bigger are also increasingly harmful. Our exposure and vulnerability to landslides, flooding, erosion and other hazards are continuously changing. Would you like to know why and when natural hazards turn into disasters? Want to play a role in minimizing their impact and reducing disaster risk? Then ITC’s specialization in Natural Hazards and Disaster Risk Reduction is just right for you.

The courses that we offer reflect our firm belief that geo-information plays an important role in multi-hazard risk assessment and disaster risk reduction. You will gain insight in methods to evaluate how hazards and risk may change in the future, due to global changes. You will also learn how geo-information is used for the evaluation of both ecosystem-based and engineering measures for disaster risk reduction, disaster preparedness planning, and post-disaster damage assessment. For your MSc research you’ll have the option to join forces with ITC’s research group 4D-Earth

Geoinformatics



Geo-spatial data is the major driver of today’s information society. More Big Geo Data than ever is being created by smart phones, satellites, and sensors. This data is used for an increasing number of scientific purposes that aim to benefit the world. It’s a matter of gathering, analyzing, distributing and visualizing the data to make it fit for specific use, e.g. in systems for improving agricultural practice or creating healthy cities. The technologies supporting these processes are at the core of geoinformatics.

Efficiently managing these amounts of data takes more than skills. It also requires keeping pace with ongoing technological developments and understanding how to interpret them. That is why ITC’s specialization in Geoinformatics offers courses that teach the required multi-disciplinary approach. You will learn to design and develop algorithms, models, and tools that can process geo-spatial data into reliable, actionable information. You will also be exploring practical areas of application, such as water scarcity, forest monitoring, and urban infrastructures.

Land Administration



Land is at the basis of all societies. A healthy land administration means secure land tenure, and efficient land markets and land development. In the process it contributes to developing and supporting local economies as well as reducing poverty and helping to avoid related disputes. Unfortunately, less than a quarter of the world’s countries maintain a complete land administration system. Would you like to be a change agent helping countries achieve and sustain societal stability and prosperity? Then ITC’s specialization in Land Administration is your perfect choice.

With our courses we will provide you with the knowledge and skills you need to design and apply responsible land administration solutions to address real life challenges. To this end we take a multi-disciplinary approach, with considerable emphasis on land information systems.

Urban Planning and Management



How to make − and keep − the world’s modern cities healthy and attractive for the increasing multitudes living and working there? How to ensure that cities are sufficiently compact, sustainable, inclusive, competitive, and resilient? Realising these objectives requires a keen understanding of dynamic urban processes. In gaining such understanding geo-information science and technology constitute an indispensable source of information. Which is the very foundation for ITC’s specialization in Urban Planning and Management.

Mind you, this specialization is not only about acquiring geo-information knowledge and skills. On the contrary − you will be constantly challenged to apply what you have learned to current themes such as urban poverty, transport, climate change adaptation, disaster preparedness, and environmental planning. For your MSc research you’ll have the option of joining forces with dedicated ITC research group PLUS.

As a graduate you will be more than eligible for positions in advisory, operational, technical and executive functions related to urban and regional planning.

Natural Resources Management



By 2040, the world’s population will reach 9 billion, and we will share the world with an additional 1.4 billion people. This increase is more than the entire population of Africa. At the same time, living standards are improving, leading to a massive increase in demand for food, timber, water and other resources, which are already affected by climate change and a fragmenting environment. Without proper management, serious problems such as deforestation, overgrazing and biodiversity loss are inevitable. Would you like to help turn this situation around, as an environmental manager? Then ITC’s specialisation in Natural Resources Management is the way to go.

Our courses focus on food security, biodiversity and forestry, with a multi-disciplinary approach to specific knowledge, skills and real-world issues. You will learn to use modern GIS and remote sensing technology to gather relevant data about our planet and its natural resources. More to the point, you will learn to translate data into information to support decisions that can lead to more sustainable use of resources.

Water Resources and Environmental Management



Many of the world’s major environmental concerns have to do with water. Potable water is getting increasingly scarce, which makes it a valuable resource to be managed wisely. Extreme weather causes excessive flooding which can often be prevented with proper by interventions. Pollution of valuable water resources and the status of precious wetlands deserve close monitoring. Would you like to contribute to tackling these issues caused by having too little, too much, or dirty water? Then ITC’s specialization in Water Resources and Environmental Management is what you’re looking for.

Timely, accurate, and detailed spatial information on the status of water resources is the key to managing water resources. At ITC you will learn how to utilize theoretical knowledge and develop the skills required for effective water resources management. ITC research areas you could explore include flood prediction, groundwater recharge, drought monitoring and prediction, water quality monitoring, and climate studies. For your own MSc research you’ll be able to join forces with dedicated ITC research group on Water and Climate.

Applied Remote Sensing for Earth Sciences



From the houses that we live in to the smartphones that we use: earth resources play a vital role in our daily life. Earth also contains hidden geothermal systems that can provide energy for the production of electricity. In the search for mineral resources and geothermal fields, remote sensing technology becomes ever more important. Are you an earth scientist who wants to become a remote sensing expert as well? Then ITC’s specialization in Applied Remote Sensing for Earth Sciences is what you’re looking for.

In our specialization courses we integrate the use of state-of-the-art digital technology with an earth science perspective. Main goal of our staff is to take earth scientists and geologists, and make them into geological remote sensing experts. You will study the geological environment and its mineral resources, using hyperspectral remote sensing, optical and thermal infrared spectroscopy, geophysics and advanced image analysis. In a digital workflow environment, you will learn to combine remote sensing data with laboratory and field measurements, and to extract information from these data.

Tailor-made specialization



Do you have an area of expertise and/or career path in mind that is not quite covered by the specializations as outlined by ITC? Not to worry, as you can also define your very own specialization by making a personal selection from the courses on offer in the different specializations. An ITC team of mentor and research theme coordinator will be glad to help you compose an alternative integral programme of courses.

At the start of the Master’s programme you will identify and select four courses (7 credits each) to be added to the compulsory common and elective courses for the first year. Final approval of your course selection will be subject to proper motivation, consent to be given by the research theme coordinator, and feasibility in terms of course planning.

Geo-information is a rapidly growing industry worldwide. Geographical information systems (GIS) and remote sensing tools can be used for solving real world problems and complex issues around health care, food security, climate, water, urban planning, security and scarcity of land. The uses are many and various and to some extent have already unobtrusively entered our daily lives.
Geo-information and GIS techniques were mainly used in governments, ministries, research institutes, provinces and municipalities. In recent years it has expanded to all organizations where spatial information plays an important role, from public service corporations and telecommunications companies to water authorities and retailers.

Skilled personnel with the appropriate expertise are needed to effectively manage the information and opportunities provided by these new technologies.
