Meike Jacobs
Meike Jacobs - Student testimonial Theology and Religious Studies Leiden University

After my BA I wanted to enroll in a master's programme that would give me opportunities to develop my knowledge of specific religious topics that held my interest. I was able to do this in the MA Theology and Religious Studies in Leiden, where I could choose my own courses and specialise in my own field.

Individual guidance
Apart from this freedom of choice, another strong point of the MA Theology and Religious Study is its small size. This means small classes, which in turn means more personal attention from staff members...
You can always drop by to ask questions. This is of great value when you're working on your thesis, but also when you have trouble adjusting from a BA to a MA study. In short, there's a lot of individual guidance.

Sharpen your focus…
My recommendation to aspirant students in religious studies is: choose the MA Theology and Religious Studies if you want to sharpen your focus and find your own specific field of interest.

…and meet new people!
And be sure to really enjoy your time studying in Leiden, as the city has a lot to offer. The department of Theology and Religious Studies also has a very nice student association, which organises a lot of activities. It is a great place to start when you want to meet new people.

Fatiha Azzarhouni - Testimonial Theology and Religious Studies Leiden University

After my Bachelor degree in Islamic Theology, enrolling in the MA Theology and Religious Studies was a logical next step. This study enabled me to learn more – and in depth – about religion in general and Islam in the West specifically.

Leiden Islam Outreach Programme
Following my graduation I became a programme manager of the Leiden Islam Outreach Programme (LIOP) at Leiden University, which I established together with Professor Maurits Berger...
I've become well trained in academic writing and critical thinking, which I apply in my work every day.

Religion, culture and politics
Although religions in some parts of the world and specifically in the Netherlands seem to be on the wane, old and new forms of religions still continue to exist or even proliferate. Due to globalisation and migration, religion is something with which everyone is confronted, voluntarily or non-voluntarily. This MA helps you to understand religion and its interplay with other important factors such as culture and politics within a certain 'zeitgeist'.

Ernestine van der Wall
Prof. Ernestine van der Wall - Testimonial Theology and Religious Studies Leiden University

“What is the role of religion in the modern world? Has Christianity served its purpose in our society? Could it be the victim of its own success? Or is religion taking on new shapes? But how new are these shapes? Millenarian end-of-the-world scenarios, for example, are once again very popular in some circles, but how original are they really?”

“These are the kind of questions that make the study of Christianity so appealing, particularly in my specialisation with its focus on modern and early-modern Christianity between 1650 and today...
You can approach such questions not just from the historical perspective but also from the perspective of social sciences.

This already demonstrates that we approach Christianity from different disciplines in our centre. Furthermore, we don't just look at Christianity in all its different manifestations but also its role and meaning in regions across the world. The diversity of fundamental questions and disciplinary approaches, the attention for cultural, social, political and geographical contexts in which religious phenomena occur, and the national and international manifestations of Christianity are fascinating aspects of the study of this global religion.”

Judith Frishman
Prof. Judith Frishman - testimonial Theology and Religious Studies Leiden Unvisity

The study of Jews and Judaism in modernity has increasingly engaged the interest of scholars over the past 50 years. My own fascination is with the effects of Enlightenment and modernity on Jewish identity, both collective and individual, in Western Europe.

The link between the rise of nationalism and the majority religion in the 19th c. brought about a rethinking of what it meant to be Jewish...
This is then the challenge that I have set myself for the coming years.
