The Master's in Media Studies programme at Leiden University has four specialisations, each of which considers different forms of the media, and how these inter-relate.

Study the media from a broad perspective, from literature, film and photography to the new media. This breadth will give you ample opportunity to create cross-connections between the different specialisations:

All of our Media Studies master's programmes offer you the opportunity to explore present-day media forms and how these are related to one another, while at the same time investigating the roots of this relatively new field.

specialisatie Book and Digital Media Studies

The MA Book and Digital Media Studies at Leiden University covers a broad range of topics related to reading and the circulation of text in manuscript, print and digital form.

Develop your expertise in the dynamic process of knowledge transmission through analogue and digital media with the MA Book and Digital Media Studies.

The only programme of its kind in the Netherlands, this master's teaches you essential skills in how to critically assess academic theories in the field of publishing and textual media as well as Book Studies.

Leiden University is an internationally-recognised centre for the study of humanities. Our students access unique resources at the famous Leiden University Library and the 'Press Room' of Academic Press Leiden and learn from leading scholars in the field.

Study the historical development and modern practice of textual communication from Gutenberg to Google. Much attention is given to the far-reaching consequences of the digital revolution for the world of the book. Take field trips to world-famous institutions including the seventeenth-century Bibliotheca Thysiana, the Koninklijke Bibliotheek, and the Antwerp Museum Plantin-Moretus.

specialisatie Cultural Analysis: Literature and Theory

Leiden University's master's in Cultural Analysis: Literature and Theory takes a comparative and theoretical approach to the study of literature.

Offering a wide and diverse array of courses, this intercultural MA programme is not limited to the study of literature within one language or culture but covers languages and cultures from around the world.

The four main themes of this programme are: Literary Theory, Comparative Literature, Interculturality (cross-cultural approach), and Intermediality (cross-mediatic approach).

An established collaboration between the Leiden Master's and the Master's in Literary Studies at the University of Amsterdam (UvA) allows you to exchange at least one course in the Leiden programme for a course offered by Amsterdam.

Please note: this MA was previously called 'Comparative Literature and Literary Theory'.

specialisatie Film and Photographic Studies

The Master's in Film and Photographic Studies at Leiden University takes an interdisciplinary approach to the study of 'lens-based' media: photography, film and video.

The Film and Photographic Studies MA covers the history and theory of film and photography within the broad context of visual and other media.

Designed for students with an undergraduate degree in a related field or relevant professional experience, this programme offers excellent preparation for a career in cinema, photography or media/art.

At the Leiden University Library you can access one of the oldest photo collections in the Netherlands. Learn from acclaimed scholars at Leiden University's Humanities department, as well as artists, critics, and curators.

Acquire an interdisciplinary understanding of these mediums. Explore theories and discourses and the history of lens-based media since the nineteenth century.

An exciting range of learning methodologies include lectures, workshops, seminars, field trips and internships. Our students have done internships in organisations including New York's International Center of Photography and London's Victoria & Albert Museum.

specialisatie Journalistiek en Nieuwe Media

The MA Journalism and New Media at Leiden University offers students the opportunity to develop a professional journalistic writing style, while acquiring a solid academic grounding.

honours-/excellence program Leiden Leadership Programme

The Leiden Leadership Programme (LLP) is an honours programme of 15 ECs on top of the regular master's curriculum. The programme consists of training courses, seminars and a practical assignment.

Are you looking for an extra challenge in addition to your Leiden master's programme? Are you adventurous enough to look beyond the borders of your own master's programme? The Leiden Leadership Programme may be just what you are looking for.

The programme gives you the opportunity to develop your leadership skills. You will follow seminars and courses, as well as carrying out a practical assignment for a company or organisation as part of a small, multidisciplinary team. Your lecturers will be leading academics and experienced professionals from the business sector.

Beroepsperspectief / arbeidsmarkt

Leiden University's Humanities graduates do very well in the job market. A master's degree enhances the career prospects of all bachelor's graduates, as does relevant work experience during your studies and choosing your electives strategically.
Your career opportunities for the MA Media Studies will strongly depend on the specialisation you have chosen.

Students who graduate from our Film and Photographic Media specialisation have gone on to find employment in professions such as a film and photo historian, curator, critic or picture editor. Graduates from our Comparative Literature and Literary Theory specialisation have gone on to take up roles within journalism, in translation agencies, or as copywriters, policy-makers or editors at publishing houses.

You will also be qualified to continue in academic research and could apply for a PhD programme.
