The two-year Master's in Literary Studies (Research) at Leiden University consists of core courses, interdisciplinary and disciplinary seminars, research seminars and an MA thesis.
The first semester starts with the seminar 'Cultural Theory for the 21st Century', which offers an overview of the theoretical approaches used in the programme. You also choose an interdisciplinary seminar, a disciplinary seminar, and a 5 ec course within one of the national research schools.

During your second semester you take the compulsory course 'Methodological Concepts in Art and Literature'. You also choose one interdisciplinary seminar, and one disciplinary seminar.

Your third semester involves a compulsory thesis seminar, research colloquium, and two elective seminars. These can be taken at another university or replaced with an internship at an affiliated department, museum, or cultural institution abroad.

During your fourth semester you write Research Master's thesis. You are also required to take a 5 ec course within one of the national research schools of your choice.

The two-year Master's in Literary Studies (Research) aims to provide students with an interdisciplinary and disciplinary, historical and theoretical knowledge of the interconnected fields of media, art history, literature and literary theory.
The acquisition of advanced academic skills in the interpretation of texts, the analysis and solution of conceptual problems, the ability to conduct scientific research and the effective communication of ideas are other key goals of the programme. Opportunities are provided for students to broaden their world experience by conducting field work for their research project, taking part in an internship, or taking courses at another top university.

You can also opt to follow some electives at a university abroad or choose an internship in an affiliated Department, Museum, or other cultural institution in Europe or the United States. We have Erasmus and other exchange agreements with many European and American Universities.
honours-/excellence program Leiden Leadership Programme

The Leiden Leadership Programme (LLP) is an honours programme of 15 ECs on top of the regular master's curriculum. The programme consists of training courses, seminars and a practical assignment.

Are you looking for an extra challenge in addition to your Leiden master's programme? Are you adventurous enough to look beyond the borders of your own master's programme? The Leiden Leadership Programme may be just what you are looking for.

The programme gives you the opportunity to develop your leadership skills. You will follow seminars and courses, as well as carrying out a practical assignment for a company or organisation as part of a small, multidisciplinary team. Your lecturers will be leading academics and experienced professionals from the business sector.

Good grades comparable with an average mark of at least 7.5 (Dutch grading system) for the entire bachelor's programme, and a grade for the bachelor's thesis of an 8 or higher.

A bachelor's degree from a university, equivalent to the level of a Dutch academic bachelor's degree, in Comparative Literature/Literary Studies or in a specific language and culture (Dutch, English, French, etc.).
