The MA Linguistics at Leiden University is unique in continental Europe for its linguistics expertise covering all corners of the world.

The Linguistics MA at Leiden University is highly flexible giving you the freedom to tailor it to your specific interests in linguistics.

The programme is delivered by the Leiden University Centre for Linguistics (LUCL), an institute with a long-standing international reputation for excellence. In the QS World University Rankings 2016 the Linguistics department at Leiden University was ranked 28th in the world. So you will be taught by lecturers who have been awarded prestigious grants and academic prizes.

The Linguistics master's programme offers you to choose from the largest selection of languages taught and studied at any institution in the Netherlands or the surrounding region, varying from Chinese to German, from Papuan to Slavic languages, and many more.

In addition, during the programme you will be part of small groups where you will benefit from individual guidance and support.

The structure of the Linguistics MA enables you to acquire academic knowledge and skills and train you in the use of scientific methods in general and to your chosen specialisation.
The programme consists of 60 EC, to be completed in one year.
Part-time students complete the programme in 1,5 years, they will have a course load of 20 EC per semester. Courses are scheduled during office hours.

  • MA Thesis 20 EC

specialisatie Chinese Linguistics

The MA Chinese Linguistics at Leiden University offers you an outstanding opportunity to concentrate on the different aspects of the languages of China, especially their sounds and syntax.

You will join a Master's programme with a strong tradition in and focus on Chinese linguistics. The programme is delivered by the Leiden University Centre for Linguistics (LUCL), an institute with a long-standing international reputation for excellence. In the QS World University Rankings 2016 the Linguistics department at Leiden University was ranked 28th in the world.

You will gain knowledge in language variation: in all courses we look beyond Mandarin, both diachronically and synchronically. You will learn to understand the different languages of China from their phonetic-phonology aspects as well as their syntactic aspects. You will also acquire the latest knowledge and most recent developments in this area of linguistics.

During the programme you will be part of small groups where you will benefit from individual guidance and support.

specialisatie Theoretical Linguistics and Cognition

The MA Theoretical and Experimental Linguistics at Leiden University concentrates on the complexity of languages, ranging from their syntactic structure to how humans process and produce language.

You will focus on a diverse range of topics including formal grammar – syntax, semantics, phonology – and experimental approaches to speech acquisition, clinical linguistics and the modelling of speech and language. You are able to choose from the largest selection of languages taught and studied at any institution in the Netherlands or the surrounding region.

You will develop a thorough understanding of the complexity of natural languages. You will also learn from a dedicated staff of active researchers in an inspiring academic atmosphere that encourages original and fruitful research.

In addition, you may be able to do an intership during your studies.

specialisatie Translation in Theory and Practice (Dutch/English)

This MA Translation in Theory and Practice (Dutch/English) at Leiden University is best characterised by linguistic and cultural mediation.

As a Leiden University-trained translator, one of your most important assets will be your ability to apply knowledge of auxiliary disciplines, both linguistic (syntax, semantics, psycholinguistics) and non-linguistic (culture studies, genre studies, comparative law), to specific translation problems.

Language and culture cannot be separated. Interpreters and translators are linguistic and cultural mediators, whether they are translating a notarial document for a foreigner, subtitling an episode of Game of Thrones, or translating the latest novel by Nicki French.

You will learn how to translate from English to Dutch and vice versa. At Leiden, we believe there is as much demand for translators from Dutch to English and thus teach translation “both ways”.You will also acquire the skills to translate texts on a wide variety of topics, with a focus on one of three fascinating areas of specialised translation:legal, literary or multimedial translation.

You will earn a qualification that will give you entry to the national register of sworn interpreters and translators.

specialisatie Comparative Indo-European Linguistics

This MA Comparative Indo-European Linguistics at Leiden University is unique in the Netherlands and focuses on the study and comparison of a wide range of interrelated languages in Europe and Asia.

The flexibility of the Comparative Indo-European Linguistics Master's programme allows you to compile your own package of courses tailored to your interests. The programme is delivered by the Leiden University Centre for Linguistics (LUCL), an institute with a long-standing international reputation for excellence.   • You will learn how to reconstruct the language that was the basis of the many separate languages of the Indo-European language family.

The MA English Language and Linguistics at Leiden University offers a wide array of topics ranging from how language and people influence each other to what the various functions of languages are.

The English Language and Linguistics Master's programme covers theoretical, applied, historical and socio-historical linguistics, building on the current linguistic research being conducted at the Leiden University Centre for Linguistics (LUCL), one of the largest linguistics institutes in the Netherlands and home to some of continental Europe's finest English scholars.

You will gain a broad and deep knowledge of the empirical, theoretical, and experimental approaches to linguistics. The MA Italian Language and Linguistics at Leiden University examines the Italian language from historical, sociolinguistic and typological perspectives.

During the programme you will gain insights into the dialectal and regional variations of Italian, through courses that cover both theoretical and applied linguistics, and topics that include the use of Italian and Italian dialects.

This specialisation is taught entirely in the Italian language, giving you the opportunity to greatly improve your command of the language. You will take courses that build on the linguistic research currently being carried out at the Leiden University Centre for Linguistics (LUCL), an institute with a long-standing international reputation.

You will gain in-depth knowledge of the interaction between languages and the environments in which they are put to use. You can choose from the largest selection of languages taught and studied at any institution in the Netherlands or the surrounding region.

You will benefit from a dedicated team of active researchers of high academic standing, who provide constant support throughout the programme. Courses are based on the academic research carried out at the Leiden University Centre for Linguistics (LUCL), one of the largest linguistics institutes in the Netherlands. In the MA Language Diversity of Africa, Asia and native America at Leiden University you will study the linguistic structures of a wide variety of languages spoken in these regions.

You will join a Master's programme taught by internationally renowned experts who regularly carry out research in Africa, Asia and the Americas. You will benefit from their knowledge of and experience with the many interesting features of each region.

You will develop a thorough understanding of the complexity of natural languages spoken in Africa, Asia and Native America and you are able to choose from the largest selection of languages taught and studied at any institution in the Netherlands.

You will gain knowledge on an array of topics, ranging from how the perspective of the speaker determines the structure of sentences in languages of the Americas, the function of serial verb constructions in Africa to the structure of numeral systems in Asia.

You will also benefit from the latest linguistics research conducted at the Leiden University Centre for Linguistics (LUCL), an institute with a long-standing international reputation for excellence and the foundation for all our Linguistics courses.

You may have the opportunity to do fieldwork during your studies.

De Nationale Studenten Enquete is het grootschalige onderzoek van de overheid onder studenten in Nederland naar de kwaliteit van opleidingen aan hogescholen en universiteiten.
