Sofja Volkova
Sofja Volkova - Student Testimonial Linguistics (research) Leiden University

The Research Master in Linguistics has provided me with a great diversity of courses taught by a leading, yet very approachable group of researchers.

I was struck by the level of depth offered by the programme and the encouragement of your own input in the research assignments. In the past 1.5 years I have gradually specialised myself in the fields of syntax and language acquisition. With skillful guidance I have learned to combine my research interests in an interdisciplinary approach, this is a strategy I believe to be fruitful for obtaining robust data...
I enjoy alternating between theory and experimental linguistics, as it is beneficial for my creative thinking and the outcome of my research as such. Therefore, I will greatly miss my back-and-forth from the lab to the courses along the streets of Leiden.

The value of linguistic research
My programme has strengthened my belief in the value of linguistic research, I thus would like to continue exploring my fields of interest in the academia.

“How well do Dutch, Chinese and Americans understand one another when speaking English?”

“I am fascinated by speech because you can study it scientifically. Speech is a natural phenomenon: you can record it as an acoustic phenomenon, you can study how the mouth produces sound, you can even make sounds visible. We can also instruct a computer to respond to a particular acoustic signal. Connectionism is an exciting new development. Linguists, psychologists, physicists and medical specialists together carry out research into how language works...
How well do people understand one another if they do not share the same mother tongue? How well do Dutch, Chinese and Americans understand one another when they are all speaking English? We are developing models with which we can predict intelligibility. The Netherlands has more linguists per square kilometre than any other country in the world. I think this is because the Netherlands is a small country which has always had close economic ties with neighbouring countries with different languages. The Dutch set out to learn these languages and this confrontation stimulated their curiosity. But the colonial past also played a role. From early times, Dutch people have been exposed to exotic languages, and Leiden played a major part in describing these languages. We currently have many international students who come to Leiden to study Linguistics.”
