The cell is the building block of life. Increased knowledge of the mechanisms of the biomolecular and biochemical processes in the cell leads to better medicines, new methods for combating diseases.

The basis of the two-year master's programme in Life Science and Technology is formed by research carried out in the life sciences and chemistry groups of the Leiden Institute of Chemistry (LIC). Researchers take a science-based approach in finding tailored solutions for complex societal problems as encountered in personalized medicine, systems biology and sustainable use of biological sources. Starting from day one, and during the whole master programme you are a member of a research team in the LIC. Guided by a personal mentor, the student assembles a tailor-made educational programme for optimal training to become a life sciences professional.

specialisatie Life Science and Business Studies

In the master's specialisation Life Science and Business Studies, you combine high quality research in life sciences with training in management and entrepreneurship.

Business Studies bridges science and business by focusing on areas such as technology management, innovation, entrepreneurship, operations and decision-making. In this master's specialisation you combine life science research with Business Studies. You will learn about analytical frameworks and skills for managerial decision-making. The emphasis of the business specialisation is on the application of these frameworks and skills in the context of R&D-intensive organisations. After completion, you have obtained the necessary knowledge and skills to take on managerial responsibilities in your work.

Do you pursue a management career in industry from a LST research perspective? Do you want to learn all about technology commercialization and business development? Then, LST and Business Studies is the master's specialisation of choice for you. It enables you to broaden your scope outside research in Life Science and Technology. The specialisation offers training that is analytically rigorous and connected to practice through class discussions based on real-life business cases, company visits, guest speakers, and an internship experience.

In this specialisation you will learn to find solutions for complex societal problems as encountered in personalized medicine, chemical biology and sustainable use of biological sources.

In recent decades, life science research has enabled enormous breakthroughs in our understanding of fundamental molecular and cellular processes and mechanisms of life. Knowledge about genomic organisation, studies of protein-protein interactions and the characterisation of molecular structures have become central in modern life science research. Knowledge of chemical biology forms the basis of the molecular understanding of health and disease. It finds important applications in innovative health care, in the pharmaceutical industry and in so-called 'red' biotechnology, and is the focus of the Leiden programme.

If you want to understand the outcomes of molecular and structural chemistry in-depth and gain insight in basic processes underlying various diseases our master's programme is the right choice. More in general, this research specialisation is the best choice for you if you aim for a career in life science research or if you have the aspiration to pursue a PhD degree.

instruction modes
At the start of the programme you will choose a personal mentor. The mentor will be your personal coach during the complete master's programme. You will also use a digital Master planner to schedule your studies. The schedule will be monitored by your mentor and the study coordinator. During your master programme you will become a member of one of the research groups and receive the necessary guidance.
study abroad
Within the tailor-made construction of the programme students get the opportunity to study abroad. You will have the option to follow elective courses abroad or conduct your research project in an industrial research laboratory or at a university abroad.
objectives
The programme comprises a research training project and four compulsory courses; the exact programme depends on the chosen specialisation.
The MSc students will become a member/colleague of one of our research groups. The student choses their specialisation (Research, Communication (SCS), Education (EDU), Science-based Business (SBB)) and research training project. Based on these choices the student will be enabled to compose their personalised, tailor-made MSc programme together with their mentor. The mentor will guide and advise the student during the complete MSc programme.

Students in the research specialisation spend at least 60 EC on research in one of our internationally renowned research groups in molecular or biomedical research areas within LIC, academic hospitals or the Dutch cancer institute. Based on the choice of the research training project the student will take four compulsory courses (24 EC) to strengthen the required theoretical background to support their academic training as independent scientists. In addition, students will have a choice (30 EC) from a large number of elective courses to accommodate their personal scientific interests.
The students choosing the EDU, SCS or SBB specialisation will have a reduced research program (90 – 60 EC) to accommodate their specialisation modules (30-60 EC).

S.V. LIFE
The association might not be the biggest one yet, but it continues to grow. Under the control and supervision of a 5-headed board the association has a lot to offer for her students. There are regularly organized educational activities, sometimes together with sister associations in Leiden or Delft; weekly drinks in Leiden and Delft; study related lectures and excursions to companies; study trips abroad; a two-monthly magazine; a day for parents; a year book and a lot more.
All these activities are organized by committees which are formed from more than 600 members and guided by the current board of S.A. LIFE.
