Two main reasons for Leiden
I chose the master's programme in Latin American studies at Leiden University for two main reasons: the significant difference in cost in comparison to the U.S. and, more importantly for me, this is the only programme outside of Spain in Europe offered entirely in Spanish. It was invigorating to be reading, writing and presenting in Spanish with professors from Chile, Peru and other places while studying in the Netherlands...
This fieldwork must take place in Latin America for those of us not arriving directly from Central and South America. It forces you to really embrace the independence of individual research while simultaneously creating new academic and social connections to enrich your future.

Pursuing a doctorate degree
I am currently pursuing a doctorate degree in Germany focused on Latin American studies. The lessons and guidance I received at Leiden, especially from Dr. Pablo Isla Monsalve, have prepared me to be a more well-rounded and objective researcher.

Public policies in Latin America
Latin American Studies at Leiden University offered me the opportunity to expand my knowledge about public policies in Latin America. All the lectures were taught in Spanish and focused on contemporary topics, debates and issues affecting the continent...
The department has a wide network of contacts throughout the continent and every year invites highly qualified teachers from Latin America to teach a course at the University.

New experience
After graduating I found a job at the Embassy of Chile where I learned even more about politics in Chile and the bilateral and multilateral relations between Latin American countries and the world. Even though I had an interesting job there, I felt it was time for a new experience. With help from one of the professors of the programme, I obtained a job as a tutor at Leiden University. I'm looking forward to sharing my knowledge with students.

“Apart from one or two subjects, the complete master's programme is taught in Spanish, which makes us unique in Europe.”

“An increasing number of students, including Latin Americans, are discovering us, and they find our continental perspective very attrac¬tive. In most Latin American countries you are not formed as a 'Latin Americanist', but as a country specialist. In Leiden you learn to think critically about yourself. The opportunity to call identity into question is exactly what we offer, whatever that identity might be...
You are not Dutch 'by blood', but through the culture of your parents, family, classmates, friends: all pieces of a puzzle which make up you as you are, some aspects of which you are aware of and others not. Amazingly, some pieces of the puzzle are shared with other people. Why does Shakira appeal to so many people? Because she appeals to the feelings and identities of different cultures!

In this master's, students can make an in-depth study in modern history (including social sciences), literature or linguistics from a specific Latin American perspective, both in terms of theory and methodology. For this purpose, our approach is interdisciplinary. Our academic staff consists of young as well as senior scholars who share the same enthusiasm, quality and ambition.

The master's is taught in Spanish, which makes us unique in Europe outside Spain. We have a large number of Latin American colleagues: the two chair professors, several lecturers and visiting professors. Our students also come from all over the world, each of them with their own specific knowledge which leads to inspiring discussions. The result: a real explosion of talent!”
