In the Bio-Pharmaceutical Sciences master's programme you are trained at the edge of drug-design and fundamental research of new drugs, optimization of existing drugs, and personalised medicine.

Despite major advances in drug-research, many common diseases such as cancers, neurological diseases, cardiovascular disease and other auto-immune diseases, lack effective treatment, or are found incurable. You are trained for a scientific career in drug research and development. Depending on your interest, you can choose from seven specialisations to further extend your scientific training and theoretical background.

The master's programme of Bio-Pharmaceutical Sciences aims to train you in the research area of bio-pharmaceutical sciences and drug research in such a way that you have extensive knowledge and hands-on experience to be able to work independently as a scientific researcher. Moreover, you have a wide range of other career opportunities bio-pharmaceutical industry, science communication, and education.

The distinguishing feature of the Leiden MSc in Biopharmaceutical Sciences is its research-oriented approach. This research orientation is unique in Europe and enjoys a high international profile.

This master consists of both compulsory and optional elements.The compulsory components are two research projects, both of which include writing a master's thesis. The main research project should be within the disciplines of drug delivery technology or of biopharmacy. The minor research project should preferably be in a different discipline of Biopharmaceutical scienes. Other compulsory components are: a literature study, including the writing of an essay or thesis, the attending of two advanced lecture series in disciplines of BPS, the attending of the course Scientific Conduct, and the attending of twenty lectures and colloquia presented by other master's students in BPS. Optional elements can be chosen from supplementary subjects offered or may take the form of a work placement.

specialisatie Bio-Pharmaceutical Sciences and Science Communication and Society

This specialisation offers you the opportunity to combine research experience with programmes in diverse aspects of science communication, such as journalism, new media and museology.

The distinguishing feature of the Leiden MSc in Bio-Pharmaceutical Sciences is its research-oriented approach. This research orientation in the teaching programme is unique in Europe and enjoys a high international profile.
This specialisation offers students the opportunity to combine previous research training with programmes in different aspects of science communication, such as journalism, new media, museology and information visualisation.

Students of this master's specialisation have an excellent opportunity to broaden their studies outside their own specialist field, and during the work placement are able to try out the interesting opportunities offered by a career as scientific communicator or scientific journalist. The experiences and insights gained will be of benefit to those who intend to continue in an academic environment, for example as a PhD candidate in their own specialist field. The ability to communicate about science is an essential skill which all scientists should have mastered!

specialisatie Bio-Pharmaceutical Sciences: Systems Pharmacology

The distinguishing feature of the Leiden MSc in Bio-Pharmaceutical Sciences is its research-oriented approach. This research orientation is unique in Europe and enjoys a high international profile.

The major compulsory components are the two research projects, both of which include writing a master's thesis. The major research project must be in one of the disciplines of Systems Pharmacology, and the minor research project preferably in a different discipline of Bio-Pharmaceutical Sciences.
Other compulsory components are: a literature study, including writing an essay or thesis, attending two advanced lecture series in disciplines of Bio-Pharmaceutical Sciences, participating in the Scientific Conduct course, and attending twenty lectures and colloquia presented by other master's students in Bio-Pharmaceutical Sciences.
For the optional component, the master's student can choose from additional courses or work placements.

specialisatie Industrial Pharmacy

Industrial Pharmacy is a pilot specialisation of the Master's programme Bio-Pharmaceutical Sciences. Admission of a small number of participants (max. 2 for 2014-2015) occurs after selection only.

The Master's specialisation in Industrial Pharmacy trains students in safety and quality control in the production of medicinal products, and prepares students for a career in Quality Assurance and Quality Control in the biotechnological and pharmaceutical industry. This specialisation comprises both compulsory and optional elements.

Industrial Pharmacy is a pilot specialisation of the Master's programme Bio-Pharmaceutical Sciences (BPS). Admission of a small number of participants (max. 2 for 2014-2015) occurs after selection only.
The Board of Admissions will judge the candidate's personal skills (e.g. awareness of responsibility, accuracy, communication skills, methodological approach when analysing complex problems, and motivation) for qualification to the specialisation. A final decision on admission to the specialisation Industrial Pharmacy will be made after completion of at least half of (≥ 22 EC) the research project at one of the research Divisions of the LACDR (Research Project 1). Should you not be submitted, it is an option to switch between specialisations of Bio-Pharmaceutical Sciences. Please contact the study advisers for more information.

Drug researchers inherently operate internationally. Therefore, BPS students are strongly stimulated to go abroad for their second research project to gain international work experience. International experience is not only important to start building an international network but it will also increase the career prospects and chances in the job market.

Do you like a personal challenge in leadership? Then join the Leiden Leadership Program.

In the one-year Leiden Leadership Program, you work on developing your personal leadership skills through an assessment, training, seminars and a practice assignment in an organisation. You discover and develop your qualities in the context of an organisation. The goal is to learn how to work intensively with other professionals and learn how to use their qualities. With the Leiden Leadership Programme, a Dutch-based honours programme, you will be able to follow 20 EC next to your Leiden, The Hague or Delft master's programme.

Beroepsperspectief / arbeidsmarkt

In the BPS Master's programme of Leiden University you are trained for a scientific career in drug research and development.

After graduating you are trained in all relevant aspects of drug research. You have hands-on experience in specialised research projects. The combination of expertise in drug research and academic skills makes you attractive for employers. All students who complete the master are admissible to a PhD programme in Bio-Pharmaceutical, Biomedical or other Life Sciences.
One finds graduates from Bio-Pharmaceutical Sciences in the entire width of the (bio)pharmaceutical field. Their careers generally remain closely related to the field of drug discovery and design, or the development and production of drugs, including drug quality, safety and clinical trials. Jobs outside research include various functions in the pharmaceutical industry, in biotechnology companies, or with the government.

Many graduates from Bio-Pharmaceutical Sciences choose a career in scientific research and pursue a PhD degree. After obtaining your PhD degree you can continue as a postdoctoral fellow and subsequently, via a tenure track position at university, develop further to assistant-, associate-, or full professor.
