The Master's in Korean Studies capitalises on Leiden University's position as Europe's leading centre of expertise on Korean studies.

Leiden University opened the first centre dedicated to Korean studies in Western Europe in 1947. You learn from scholars at the leading edge of research on pre-modern and modern Korea.

Explore Korea from diverse disciplinary perspectives – at times using original source materials – from its religion and popular culture to its modern and contemporary history. Access the world-class resources of the Leiden University Library and its famous collection of Asian artifacts.

The two-year MA in Korean Studies offers a large and varied selection of subjects and the freedom to choose the areas on which you will focus.
The first semester is held in Leiden and consists of the core courses 'Introduction to Asian Studies' and 'Thesis and Methods Class', advanced Korean language courses, and an elective course with a focus on Korea. You can also follow a number of courses offered through the MA Asian Studies programme. The next two semesters are taken at one of Leiden's partner universities in Korea, where you will develop your language skills. The final semester is dedicated to writing and writing skills, including more advanced language training. At the end of the programme, you will produce a master's thesis based on original research of primary material in Korean and a review of the related professional literature.

The objective of the Master's in Korean Studies is to equip ambitious students with the essential knowledge and skills to pursue a successful career in their chosen profession.

The development of a high-level of fluency in the Korean language, a broad and in-depth knowledge of Korea, and the ability to think critically and analytically are key goals of this programme. Opportunities are provided for you to broaden your world experience and professional skills.

You will spend two semesters at one of Leiden's partner universities in Korea, where you will develop your language skills through intensive study courses. At the end of the third semester, your language-level – and thus your subsequent course choice – will be based upon the results of internationally recognised exams in Korean as a foreign language (or exams held at Leiden at the beginning of the semester).
honours-/excellence program Leiden Leadership Programme

The Leiden Leadership Programme (LLP) is an honours programme of 15 ECs on top of the regular master's curriculum. The programme consists of training courses, seminars and a practical assignment.

Are you looking for an extra challenge in addition to your Leiden master's programme? Are you adventurous enough to look beyond the borders of your own master's programme? The Leiden Leadership Programme may be just what you are looking for.

The programme gives you the opportunity to develop your leadership skills. You will follow seminars and courses, as well as carrying out a practical assignment for a company or organisation as part of a small, multidisciplinary team. Your lecturers will be leading academics and experienced professionals from the business sector.

A grade of at least 7.0 or the equivalent thereof for the bachelor's thesis.


  • Applicants should have completed components at the bachelor's level equivalent to at least 30 EC on at least three out of six disciplines of one or more East Asian countries or regions: ◦history, art, culture, politics, society or economy
  • Knowledge of important historical, sociocultural and political developments in the region, and of traditions in Korean Studies
  • An important aspect of the programme is advanced language acquisition in Korean; at least 10 EC of the programme are dedicated to language training. Because an important distinguishing aspect of the programme is advanced language acquisition in Korean, this specialisation is not suitable for native speakers, and for students with a higher TOPIC level, unless they wish to continue their learning of another East Asian language at an advanced level (for instance Chinese speakers learning Japanese or Korean).

A bachelor's degree from a university, equivalent to the level of a Dutch academic bachelor's degree, in Humanities or Social Sciences.

Tanuki organiseert feesten en borrels, filmavonden, excursies, lezingen en uitwisselingen met Japanners die in Nederland verblijven. En er is zelfs een eigen voetbalteam: TFC Banzai! Ook onderhoudt Tanuki contacten met het bedrijfsleven – altijd handig voor stages. De Tatanukiki is het lijfblad van de studievereniging en verschijnt zo'n zes keer per jaar, vol verhalen van medestudenten over hun verblijf in het buitenland, recepten en nog veel meer.
