The Asian Studies master's programme offers one-year specialisations in East Asia, South Asia and Southeast Asia and two-year specialisations in China, Japan, Korea.

Expertise on Asia at Leiden University is internationally renowned and spans the whole of Asia. Learn from some of Europe's best scholars in the field. Small classes give you direct and regular contact with your lecturers, many of whom are at the leading edge of Asia-related research. All programmes make the most of Leiden University's world-class resources, including its famous collections of original Asian artifacts.

With an expansive curriculum and flexible programme formats, you have the scope to tailor your qualification to reflect your interests or career ambitions. Choose to focus on a language and a single country, or on a specific discipline and region.

An important goal of many programmes is developing your fluency in a classical or modern language. You also have the option of taking an intensive modern Indonesian language course.

Taught by leading academics, the two-year Master's in Japanese Studies at Leiden University offers a multi-disciplinary approach to the study of East Asia and the region.

Leiden University has one of the oldest and most established centres of Japanese Studies in the Western world. A limited number of talented and highly-motivated students are accepted into this degree programme, ensuring each student receives a high-level of direct contact with lecturers, many of whom are top researchers in their fields. Your expertise will cover a comprehensive range of topics in modern and pre-modern Japan.

honours-/excellence program Leiden Leadership Programme

The Leiden Leadership Programme (LLP) is an honours programme of 15 ECs on top of the regular master's curriculum. The programme consists of training courses, seminars and a practical assignment.

Are you looking for an extra challenge in addition to your Leiden master's programme? Are you adventurous enough to look beyond the borders of your own master's programme? The Leiden Leadership Programme may be just what you are looking for. The programme gives you the opportunity to develop your leadership skills. You will follow seminars and courses, as well as carrying out a practical assignment for a company or organisation as part of a small, multidisciplinary team. Your lecturers will be leading academics and experienced professionals from the business sector.

Students can apply who have:

  • Good study results in the bachelor's programme;
  • The ambition and motivation to develop leadership qualities;
  • A broad and interdisciplinary span of interest.

Your motivation should be demonstrated by a well-argued and structured motivation letter in which the applicant indicates why he/she wants to follow the MA programme, and shows clear understanding of the content of the study programme, specifically listing two courses of the current study programme (from the e-Prospectus) and explaining why these appeal to the applicant. The statement should be between 700 and 1,500 words.

Tanuki
Tanuki organiseert feesten en borrels, filmavonden, excursies, lezingen en uitwisselingen met Japanners die in Nederland verblijven. En er is zelfs een eigen voetbalteam: TFC Banzai! Ook onderhoudt Tanuki contacten met het bedrijfsleven – altijd handig voor stages. De Tatanukiki is het lijfblad van de studievereniging en verschijnt zo'n zes keer per jaar, vol verhalen van medestudenten over hun verblijf in het buitenland, recepten en nog veel meer.
