A binding theme is the effect of works of art on the viewer and the ways in which the medium of art works contribute to this.

This broad approach ensures you become familiar with different methods and allows you to connect with other disciplines such as anthropology, natural sciences, and international studies.

specialisaties

specialisatie Art and Architecture before 1800

The MA specialisation Art and Architecture before 1800 at Leiden University is your opportunity to gain in-depth knowledge in the art and architecture that evolved during the years prior to 1800.

Architecture is a specialisation of Leiden University's Master's in Arts and Culture. In this specialisation you not only study architectural history from the perspective of the architects, their designs and the way in which their work is implemented, you also pay attention to clients, the public and how the public responds to architecture and the built-up environment.

Central themes include:

  • Italian baroque
  • exchanges between Italy and the Low Countries in the period from 1500 to 1750
  • alternative architecture discourses in the 20th century, from regionalism and traditionalism to neo-baroque
  • architecture theory, where thinking on the impact of buildings on the public is key, as in classical rhetoric or the sublime.

In Leiden you will study these themes in close co-operation with the Dutch interuniversity art history institutes in Rome and Florence. Excursions are a structural part of the programme. The programme is unique in that it studies works of art, buildings, material culture and design from the Middle Ages up to the present day.

specialisatie Art of the Contemporary World and World Art Studies

In the MA Art of the Contemporary World and World Art Studies at Leiden University you will be studying the developments in art in the broad context of visual culture.

In the Art of the Contemporary World and World Art Studies programme you will gain an understanding of the challenges presented by art history today, and explore developments in art in the broad context of visual culture – from social and political developments and developments in natural sciences to globalisation.

You will:

  • develop specialised knowledge in three core areas: art from a global perspective, art in relation to science, and art theory and aesthetics;
  • research a wealth of modern and contemporary art works from a cross section of mediums including photography, new media art, installation art, and more – while exploring their role as communicative mediums;
  • view famous artworks first-hand at the many major galleries, museums and cultural institutes;
  • gain a degree that qualifies you for a variety of professions including roles in cultural institutes such as museums and galleries, in the media sector, the art trade, journalism or public relations;
  • learn how to promote collaboration between artists and art venues.

Leiden University's Humanities Faculty was recently ranked 17th in the Times Higher Education worldwide ranking.

specialisatie Design and Decorative Art Studies

In this specialisation you will study layout and design in a context of the public reception and the significance of objects and interiors.

Design and Decorative Art Studies is a specialisation of Leiden University's Master's in Arts and Culture. Leiden has a long tradition of research and teaching in this specialisation, from the Early Modern to the Postmodern period.

Another option is to examine discussions on the effects of decoration, function and aesthetics of interiors and objects. This can, for instance, be from a particular period and community that is also interesting for insights into other times and cultures. You can also opt to make a more in-depth study of present-day engaged forms of design, such as ecodesign and biodesign. You can determine your own focal areas.

You will examine the designer/producer relationship, production processes and market mechanisms, as well as the transition from sophisticated craftwork to (semi)industrialised mass production to modern technologies which challenge the notions of craft and design in various ways. You will learn to analyse written sources on decorative arts, material culture and design, use them with regard to relevant theoretical viewpoints and concepts, as well as frame them in different contexts.

specialisatie Museums and Collections

In the MA specialisation Arts and Culture: Museums and Collections at Leiden University you will learn about the ethical, political and practical dilemmas that affect museums today.

The Master's programme will equip you with the skills and knowledge to play a key role in the future of museums and cultural institutions.

You will:

  • Examine how the social functions of museums and collections are changing rapidly under political and economic pressure and the increasing overlap that exists between the traditional tasks of museum curators, departments of education, and management.
  • Gain an understanding of the impact of globalisation and the changing geopolitical relations on the status of cultural heritage, including political, legal and museological aspects. You will study these issues within the context of the history and theory of collections and the cultural politics of museums and heritage.
  • Access unique resources at the expansive range of major museums, collections, libraries and research schools within easy reach of Leiden University.
  • Equip yourself for an exciting career in a range of roles in institutions including museums, galleries, (art) libraries and archives, as well as in the media sector or within journalism.
  • Leiden University's Humanities Faculty was recently ranked 17th in the Times Higher Education worldwide ranking.

Brantly Hancock
Brantly Hancock - Student Testimonial Arts and Culture Leiden University

"The Arts and Culture specialisation in Museums and Collections offers the perfect mix of hands-on and theoretical study, and I benefited especially from the programme's emphasis on independent study. There was nonetheless ample opportunity for collaboration with my peers and professors, and I developed friendships with international colleagues that I am sure will last a lifetime. The Arts and Culture instructors are all top notch, and so were my courses...
For any student of Art History, this is the place to be. Whether you are interested in Early Modern and Medieval art like myself or if, like my adopted international friends, you are a fan of contemporary art, there is no better place than Leiden to immerse yourself in the art and culture of your chosen subject. I lived less than a block from Rembrandt's birthplace and wandered the same streets as Jan Steen with the benefit of Amsterdam's contemporary art scene only a train ride away.

I envision myself one day teaching at a university or holding a senior management position in a museum… Perhaps one day I will do both! I am now transitioning from being a Museum Educator to being a Development Associate, and I will learn the ins-and-outs of fundraising and grant writing. I am certain that the critical thinking, organisational and communication skills cultivated during this programme were essential to my success. The practical and social challenges of living abroad also equipped me with necessary skills in diplomacy and adaptability, key strengths for anyone entering the workplace."

Testimonial Azinta Plantenga

“I learned a lot during my study about the objects that I now actually see in my work. “

"Although art and art history have always fascinated me, it took some time before I realised that I wanted to work in this field. After completing my bachelor's in Languages and Cultures of China at Leiden University, I moved to China to gain work experience. It was in Beijing that I really got into the art world...
This programme proved to me that applied art and design was the right direction for me. I did a research internship at the Stedelijk Museum Amsterdam, where I had my first opportunity to put my research experience into practice. Another big advantage of this internship was the chance to meet a lot of good contacts: one of these was Uniquole, a project consultancy that organises exhibitions on Dutch applied art and design.

While completing my master's thesis, I joined the company as art historian and project assistant. I recently started to work at the Stedelijk Museum as research assistant, where I carry out research on different objects in the collection. Both these positions give me every opportunity to apply my research skills. The good work ethic that I acquired during my study, as well as the ability to handle deadlines, are skills that are important assets in my work today.

The programme was a good introduction to the different subjects that form part of my specialist field. I would recommend this master's to everyone who is interested in applied art and design. There is an immense amount of knowledge available within Leiden University. The excellent training that I received during my study from true specialists taught me a lot about the objects that I am now seeing in my everyday work."
