The two-year master's programme in Archaeology (research) is organised around the excellent research for which Leiden has reached international renown. There are 7 different focus areas, centred on the research projects that reflect the broad spectrum of research undertaken within the Faculty:

  • Human Origins
  • Prehistoric Farming Communities in Europe
  • Town and Country in the Mediterranean Region and the Near East
  • Religion and Society in Native American Cultures
  • Archaeological Heritage in a Globalising World
  • The Transformation of the Roman World
  • Bioarchaeology

The courses aim to intensify and broaden the students' knowledge base and to develop research and publication skills. You are encouraged to visit conferences, contribute to workshops and to take courses outside the department.

The research master's programme forms an excellent preparation for an academic career in archaeology. Graduates are also eligible for archaeological functions at consultancies or in public service. Graduates may also find employment in positions not directly or indirectly related to their field: journalism, publishing, public relations and international organisations.

Every research master's student will start with an introductory course, followed by the research seminar throughout the programme and finally resulting in the thesis, thus embodying our concept of research-driven education. Students gain solid research skills while studying the methodological, theoretical and academic-philosophical aspects of the research focus of choice.
This programme guides you into becoming an independent, articulate and critical researcher and adequately trained member of the international research community. We offer a flexible programme with a clear research learning outcome, a personalised course plan, and thesis research.

Your research is linked to one of the Faculty's research profiles, and is assigned to a thesis supervisor from your chosen research track, ensuring a tailor-made one-on-one research trajectory. The courses are primarily from the Faculty's programmes, but you are also encouraged to take courses at related (international) institutes.

1e jaar Every research master's student will start with an introductory course in Advanced Archaeological Theory. You will also earn credits by participating in conferences, lecture series, thematic workshops, multi- and interdisciplinary courses at ARCHON, the Dutch research school of Archaeology. Finally, you will gain your first teaching experience by active assistance in the undergraduate World Archaeology course.

“In the research master's, you have a bit more time and freedom that can be used to go abroad for specific education, or for fieldwork purposes that can help you in your particular research.”

“In my bachelor's I already focused on Native American archaeology, so it was not hard to imagine continuing along the same line in the Research Master's. At a relatively small scale, while maintaining an international orientation, the programme aims at optimising personal contact and frequent communication within the department...
As opposed to regular master's programmes* you have a bit more time and freedom that can be used to go abroad for specific education, fieldwork purposes that can help you in your particular research.

For me this meant I could participate in several international schools on aerial archaeology and archaeological remote sensing. This followed on the field experience from my bachelor's featuring prospection techniques. Having strong theoretical interests I was able to incorporate this in the papers I wrote for the courses, even though it was not particular to Native America anymore. Establishing my own network through the international schools and conferences I visited and developing a personalised research trajectory now brings me in the position to apply for PhD positions when I finish my thesis.”
