Become an expert in translating important societal questions from both micro (family, social networks, crime) and macro perspectives (welfare state, solidarity) into sociological research to evaluate policies and to serve as input for new policies. The Sociology Master focuses on the analysis of such social cohesion related issues, such as populism in politics, social contacts, and solidarity.

Central theme: politics, policy and society in a comparative perspective.

Translate social problems into sociological research questions from both micro (family, social networks, crime) and macro perspectives (welfare state, solidarity). Analyze these questions with the aid of theories and advanced research methods, and evaluate and develop policy based on the results.
Taught in small, interactive workgroups with excellent individual thesis supervision.

This one-year Master's program consists of 60 credits (ECTS), of which:

5 core courses (36 ECTS)
  • Master Seminar Sociology: From Theory to Research
  • Social Policy and Social Risks
  • Social Capital: Networks, Resources and Attitudes
  • The Social Structure of Western Societies
  • Populism in Comparative Perspective

Master's thesis (24 ECTS)

You can start either end of August or end of January.
Sociology Master's students can also apply for the Extended Master or for one of the 3 double degrees.

By adding a junior traineeship of 30 ECTS (half a year) to the regular Master's program, the Extended Master provides relevant working experience and learning opportunities to enhance your professional and academic skills. The entire program (regular + extended) lasts 18 months (90 ECTS).

The program consists of 60 Credits (ECTS), equivalent to 1680 hours of study, divided into four units. The third and fourth units are reserved entirely for writing your Master's Thesis.

specialisatie Extended Master Sociology

The Extended Master in Sociology (EMS) is a Master's program lasting 18 months (90 ECTS), divided into three semesters.

During the first semester, EMS students will do the course work of the regular one-year Master in Sociology at Tilburg University. During semesters two and three, students will follow a junior traineeship at a selected organization for 50% of their time, during which they will participate in existing (research) projects; for the other 50% of the time students will carry out research for - and write - the Master Thesis. The EMS combines academic education and scientific research during the Master's thesis trajectory with in-depth work experience in an organization in a way that is not possible in the one-year Master's program.
The goal of the EMS is to provide students with relevant work experience and to enhance their research skills and knowledge.

specialisatie Double Degree in Sociology and Population Studies

Study modern societies in Tilburg University & Universitat Pompeu Fabra to identify the main forces and challenges faced by key social institutions, such as families, schools, communities, and jobs.

Two of the highest-ranked Social Science Departments in Europe combine their strengths to offer double-degree research training in Sociology and Population Studies. You will get two full Master's degrees by combining two related subject areas with different approaches. Graduate both as Master of Research in Sociology and Demography at the Universitat Pompeu Fabra (UPF) and Master of Science in Sociology at Tilburg University. An ultimate international experience by studying in Barcelona half of the time.

This 1.5-year program consists of 90 credits (ECTS). The first ¾ year you'll spend at the Universitat Pompeu Fabra in Barcelona, Spain. The second ¾ year you'll spend at Tilburg University.

You will write your Master's thesis under the supervision of a UPF or Tilburg University faculty member. Your second reader will be automatically someone from the other institution, who will act as a second grader.

You can only start end of August.

Combine the Sociology Master's programs from Tilburg University and the University of Bamberg (Germany).

Get two full Master's degrees in Sociology from two outstanding academic institutions.

The degree of the University of Bamberg focuses on the specializations 'Empirical Social Research' and 'Education, Labour Market, Inequality', following a scientific as well as practice-oriented approach.

The degree of Tilburg University focuses on politics, policy and society in a comparative perspective.

This two-year program consists of 120 credits (ECTS), of which:

  • 7 research methods and data acquisition and analysis courses (42 ECTS)
  • 3 content courses (18 ECTS)

The Master in Sociology at Tilburg University (60 ECTS):

Combine the Sociology Master's programs from Tilburg University and the University of Trento (Italy) to become an expert in political research, social policy and solving social cohesion related-issues.This double degree program in Sociology is resulting in two academic Master titles: the degree of the University of Trento focuses on political research, social policy and qualitative research. The degree of Tilburg University focuses on translating societal problems into sociological research to evaluate current policy with and derive new policies from.

This two-year program consists of 120 credits (ECTS), of which:

You will follow ten research methods and labs courses (51 ECTS in total) and two content courses (12 ECTS in total) during your first year at the University of Trento.

You will follow five content courses (27 ECTS in total) and two elective courses (9 ECTS in total) during your second year at Tilburg University.

You will start your Master's thesis (24 ECTS) in your second year with drawing your Individual Research Proposal with feedback of the thesis supervisors. You will write your Master's thesis under joint supervision of faculty members of both University of Trento and Tilburg University.

The first year you'll spend at the University of Trento in Trento, Italy. The second year you'll spend at Tilburg University.

You can only start end of August.

Sociology is a broad program that can lead to employment in a wide range of fields, giving excellent employment prospects for graduates, both within the Netherlands and beyond. People with a Master's degree in Sociology work for either local or national governmental institutions, private companies, and for research agencies. The work may be in the field of labor and employment, culture, welfare, recreation, entertainment or health care.
Sociologists may be employed as researchers, policy officers, advisors or management team members. Jobs in communication, media, research and education are also suitable for sociologists. Some graduates work as organizational or human resources policy advisors in the public or private sector.

The broad and in-depth knowledge acquired during your Sociology studies here at Tilburg will enable you to make a substantial contribution to the analysis of and solutions to today's social problems.

The range of careers open to our sociology graduates include:
